A gamepad, game controller, joypad, or video game controller is a peripheral device designed to connect to a computer or game console. It has several buttons and can have one or two mini-joysticks. The gamepad is used for games of various types, including sports games, first-person shooters, role-playing games and much more.

The gamepad is the primary peripheral used on console gaming systems such as the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo Wii. Some handheld game systems have a gamepad integrated in the gaming device, such as the Sony PSP. However, some gamepads are also designed for use on a computer, often using a USB connection.

The first gamepad was introduced in 1985, first Nintendo and then by Sega, for use with their video game systems. Since then, many types of joypads have been manufactured and sold, but they all have a similar design.
