A garden is a planned space, usually outdoors, designed to display, grow, or enjoy plants and other forms of nature. The garden can contain both natural and artificial materials. The most common form today is a residential garden, but the term garden is traditionally more generic. Zoos that feature wild animals in simulated natural habitats were formerly called zoological gardens. Western gardens are almost always plant-based, with garden often meaning an abbreviated form of a botanical garden. Some traditional types of eastern gardens, such as Zen gardens, use plants rarely or not at all.

Gardens can have structural improvements, including statuary, follies, pergolas, trellises, stumperies, dry creek beds, and water features such as fountains, lakes (with or without fish), waterfalls, or rivers. Some gardens are for ornamental purposes only, while some gardens also grow food crops, sometimes in separate plots or sometimes mixed with ornamental plants. Gardens for food production differ from farms in smaller size, more labor-intensive methods and their purpose (enjoyment of hobbies or self-service, not production for sale). The flower beds combine plants of different heights, colors, textures and aromas to generate interest and delight the senses.

Gardening is the activity of growing and tending a garden. This job is done by an amateur or professional gardener. The gardener can also work outside the garden, such as in a park, waterfront or other public place.

Landscape architecture is the professional activity of landscape architects who specialize in layered design. The etymology of the word “gardening” refers to fencing: Middle English gardin, Anglo-French gardin, jardin, of German origin; next to an old High German gard, gart, an enclosure or compound, like in Stuttgart. See Grad (Slavic settlement) for a more complete etymology. The words yard, court, and the Latin hortus (meaning “garden”, hence gardening and orchard) are similar — they all refer to an enclosed space.

The term “garden” in British English refers to a small, fenced-in area of land usually adjacent to a building. Garden design is the process of creating plans for the layout and planting for gardens and landscapes. Gardens can be designed by the gardeners themselves or by professionals. Professional garden designers are typically trained in design and horticulture principles and have knowledge and experience in using plants. Some professional garden designers are also landscape architects, a more formal level of study that usually requires a higher degree and often a government license.

Garden design elements include the layout of a solid landscape such as paths, rocks, walls, water features, seating and sidewalks, as well as the plants themselves, taking into account their gardening requirements, their seasonal season appearance, lifespan, growth habit, size, growth rate and combination with other plants and landscapes. The maintenance needs of the garden are also considered, including the time or means of funds for regular maintenance.
