German flag consists of three equal horizontal stripes – the top stripe is in black color; medium is red; and the lower stripe is in gold.

The colors black, red and gold are associated with Germany since the Middle Ages, but at the moment the German colors of the flag goes back to the beginning of the 19th century, the volunteers who fought for the country, in the Napoleonic wars. The colors are based on the uniforms of soldiers, which were black coat with red braid and gold buttons.

German flag colors now represent the unification of Germany. From 1935-1945, the German flag has a red background with a black swastika in the middle of the white circle. Former East German flag (1959-1989) featured communist emblems on it.
