A bodyguard is a security guard, government law enforcement officer, or servicemember who protects a person or a group of people ” usually high-ranking public officials or officers, wealthy individuals, and celebrities ” from dangers such as theft, assault, kidnapping, assassination, harassment, loss of confidential information, threats, or other criminal offenses. The security detail that protects a VIP is known as the VIP’s security detail.

The most powerful public figures, such as heads of state, leaders of government, and governors, are guarded by a squad of bodyguards from a government agency, security forces, or police forces (e.g., in the United States, the Secret Service or the Diplomatic Security Service of the State Department).

Royal guards, republican guards, and other military forces have traditionally served as the leader’s bodyguards in most nations where the head of state is also the military commander. A single bodyguard who also serves as a driver may accompany less-important public figures or individuals with lower risk profiles.

Bodyguards are also used by a number of high-profile celebrities and CEOs. In some nations or locations (for example, Latin America), rich people may travel with a bodyguard. Security staff may deploy an armoured vehicle to protect themselves and the VIP in specific instances.

Because the average layperson’s only exposure to bodyguarding is usually in heavily dramatized action film depictions of the profession, such as the 2018 British TV series Bodyguard, in which bodyguards are depicted in firefights with attackers, the role of bodyguards is frequently misunderstood by the public.

In contrast to the glamorous lifestyle portrayed on screen, a real-life bodyguard’s job entails planning routes, pre-searching rooms and buildings where the client will be visiting, researching the background of people who will have contact with the client, searching vehicles, and attentively escorting the client on their daily activities.

The job of a bodyguard is determined by a number of circumstances. First and foremost, it is determined by the job of a certain bodyguard in a close protection team. A bodyguard can be a driver-bodyguard, a close-protection officer (who escorts the client), or a member of an ancillary unit that provides support like electronic “bug” detection, counter-sniper monitoring, pre-searching facilities, IED detection, and background-checking people who will come into contact with the client. Second, the job of a bodyguard is determined by the client’s level of danger.

A bodyguard escorting a celebrity being stalked by aggressive tabloid photographers will be focused on quite different roles (e.g., checking cars for IED devices, bombs, watching for potential shooters, etc.) than a bodyguard escorting a client at high risk of assassination (e.g., the role will be to ask the photographers to maintain their distance and block the path of aggressive cameramen). Some bodyguards specialize in the close-quarter security of VIPs’ children in order to prevent kidnapping or assassination attempts.

Bodyguards may also drive their clients in rare situations. Normally, a single driver-bodyguard is insufficient to safeguard a client, because this would require the bodyguard to leave the automobile unsecured while escorting the client on foot. If the automobile is left unattended, various possibilities exist: an explosive device might be connected to the car; an electronic “bug” may be installed to the car; the car could be sabotaged; the car could be stolen; or local parking inspectors could simply tow the car away or clip the tire.

If the automobile is towed or disabled by parking services, the bodyguard will be unable to flee with the client in the event of a security danger while the client is at their meeting.

Short-radius bends to alter the direction of the vehicle, high-speed cornering, and other evasive driving tactics should be taught to the driver. A huge sedan with a low center of gravity and a strong engine will likely be used by the client. Large SUVs, such as Chevrolet Suburbans, are employed by VIPs in various nations. Ballistic glass in the windows, some form of armor reinforcement to protect the client from gunfire, and a foam-filled gas tank are all minimal requirements.

Driver armor protection and “run-flat tires” (which feature either exceptionally rigid sidewalls or a resilient filler to allow driving a short distance when flat, generally at a decreased speed, without lasting damage or hazard) are also desired.
