Mother’s Day, which is celebrated on 10th May 10 year 2020 was invented in the United States in the early 20th century. This celebration does not in fact follow from the Christian Mothering Sunday or any of the many other religious and world celebrations of motherhood.

In 1908 in America, Anne Jarvis held a memorial service for her mother. After that, she started campaigning for a special national holiday in honor of mothers, Mother’s Day. In 1914, it had succeeded in having this day recognized by the government and in signing by the American president Woodrow Wilson. The tradition spread around the world and it became common to give Mother’s Day cards and Mother’s Day gifts to mothers, grandmothers and the mother figure on that day. Businesses wanted to use the celebration to make many sales, and in the 1920s Anna Jarvis was disappointed with the commercialisation of the day. She spent the rest of her life and all of her family’s legacy campaigning against the day’s marketing, and was even arrested in 1946 for disturbing the peace. She seems to have been a rather busy body. She saw that the greeting cards were too lazy to write your own message and finally said that she wished she had never started the day. She might have agreed to offer a personalized gift for Mother’s Day. However, it is likely that the tradition would have quickly disappeared if it were not for the promotion by various companies such as florists.

The tradition has been adopted by many countries around the world and many have given the day a different date to coincide with existing religious holidays honoring mothers like here in Britain where it coincides with Mothering Sunday.

Mothering Sunday evolved from the 16th-century Christian practice of visiting one’s mother church each year on Laetare Sunday. Because of this tradition, most mothers were reunited with their children that day when the young apprentices and young women on duty were released by their teachers for this weekend. Influenced by the arrival of Americans on World War II Mothering Sunday, it merged with Mother’s Day and is now much more about showing appreciation for your mother and buying flowers and gifts than religion. The traditions of the two holidays are now mixed and celebrated on the same day, although many people are unaware that the festivities were once separate holidays.
