For many tourists, a visit to Sydney revolves around the harbour and the Opera House. And while these are must-see sights, a trip to nearby Darling Harbour unlocks a lot of attractions and offers a whole new perspective on Sydney Harbour. Although you can easily reach Darling Harbour in downtown Sydney, with the monorail even a 30-minute walk to capture the unique experience, it is best to arrive by ferry.
First, there is shopping. Darling Harbour offers a wide range of retail stores, but the King of them all is Harbourside Shopping Centre, a complex that offers 150 two-level outlets. Here you can browse a wide range of fashion, footwear, housewares and other delights, all under one roof. The center is very strong on local Aussie yarns with offers from Purely Australian, Colorado and Weiss Art to Ozi Varmints and Rif Raf.
It’s a great place to shop for souvenirs with all kinds of boomerangs and other memorable items from Oz, including Sydney Harbour prints and local traditional handicrafts.
You can also stock up on the usual types of hats, sunglasses and swimwear.
After shopping, it’s time to dine, and fortunately, Darling Harbour has some attractive waterfront restaurants, as well as the International Food Court, which has 40 dining points. In total, there are over 100 restaurants, cafes and outlets serving everything from pasta to authentic Thai cuisine to contemporary Australian cuisine.
One of the highlights of Darling Harbour’s dining scene is Jordon’s Seafood Restaurant. It has a seaside location with amazing views of the Sydney skyline. Relax in its elegant cocktail bar, waiting for the chefs to work on the fresh seafood.
Or go to Cockle Bay Wharf, Sydney’s latest dining spot. It is a refreshing mix of alfresco budget restaurants and swank restaurants.
Then, exit the streets full of concrete in the green and peaceful sanctuary of the Chinese Garden of Friendship. It is as if you were entering a willow plate in China, with weeping willows, pavilions, waterfalls and lakes, winding paths and bridges. Stop for a cup of tea in one of the many tea houses or just drink in the serenity.
The gardens were a gift from the sister city of Guangdong on the occasion of the 1988 Australian bicentennial holidays.
With the restoration of harmony, you can start exploring some of Darling Harbour’s entertainment options.
