Harry Edward Styles (born 1 February 1994) is an English singer, songwriter, and actor. Born in Redditch, Worcestershire, his musical career began in 2010 when he auditioned as a solo contestant in The X Factor UK music competition. After his early dropout, he returned to join the One Direction boy band, which eventually became one of the best-selling boy bands of all time. After the band’s indefinite hiatus in 2016, Styles signed to Columbia Records as a solo artist.

In 2017, Styles released their debut album of the same name, which topped the charts in fourteen countries and was among music critics at the end of the year. The single from the album “Sign of the Times” topped the UK Singles Chart, peaked at number four on the US Billboard Hot 100 and was named “Song of the Year” by Stone, while its music video earned Styles a Brit Award. Styles made his debut in Christopher Nolan’s war film Dunkirk (2017). His second studio album, Fine Line (2019), debuted on the US Billboard 200 and broke the record for the largest US debut by an English male artist during the Nielsen SoundScan era. The album released the top 10 singles from the UK and USA, “Adore You” and “Watermelon Sugar”, the latter of which topped the US Billboard Hot 100.

Harry Edward Styles was born on February 1, 1994 in Redditch, Worcestershire, the son of Anne Cox (née Selley) and finance worker Desmond “Des” Styles. Many of his ancestors were agricultural workers in Norfolk. As a child, Styles moved with his parents and older sister Gemma to Holmes Chapel, Cheshire. He attended Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School. While at Holmes Chapel Comprehensive, he was the lead singer of the band White Eskimo, which won the local Battle of the Bands competition. Styles’ parents divorced when he was seven, and his mother later married Robin Twist, who died of cancer in 2017. Styles has an older stepbrother named Mike and a stepsister named Amy, children of Twist. As a child, Styles recorded karaoke covers given to him by his grandfather, and the first song he recorded was Elvis Presley’s “The Girl of My Best Friend”. At the age of 16 he worked part-time at W. Mandeville Bakery in Holmes Chapel.

From his mother’s suggestion, on April 11, 2010, Styles auditioned as a solo contestant for the seventh season of The X Factor UK television vocal competition, performing on Stevie Wonder’s”Isn’t She Lovely”. He advanced to bootcamp, but failed to progress to the “Boys” category at “judges’ houses”.
