Hawkgirl is the name of various fictional superheroines that feature in DC Comics’ American comic comics. Shiera Sanders Hall, the original Hawkgirl, was created by Gardner Fox and Dennis Neville and debuted in Flash Comics #1. (January 1940). Shayera Hol was originally introduced in The Brave and the Bold #34 by writer Gardner Fox and illustrator Joe Kubert (March 1961). Kendra Saunders was originally introduced in JSA: Secret Files and Origins #1 by writer David S. Goyer and artist Stephen Sadowski (August 1999). Hawkgirl was one of DC’s first female superheroes, appearing in several of the company’s iconic team-up series, including Justice Society of America and Justice League of America.

Hawkgirl has appeared in several DC Comics versions, each of which is distinguished by the employment of antiquated weapons and prosthetic wings linked to a harness made of the rare Nth metal that allows her to fly. Hawkgirl’s partner/romantic interest Hawkman is usually present in most versions of Hawkgirl.

Hawkgirl’s background has been confusing since DC’s continuity was changed in the 1985 series Crisis on Infinite Earths, with various new incarnations of the character appearing throughout the years, some linked with ancient Egypt and others with the fictitious planet Thanagar. These incarnations of the character have appeared in a number of series of varying lengths.

Hawkgirl has appeared in a variety of media, including direct-to-video animated films, video games, and both live-action and animated television series, including Justice League, Justice League UnlimitedThe FlashArrow, Young Justice, DC Super Hero Girls, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, as a main or recurring character. In the Arrowverse series, Ciara Renée played the role in real action.

The Hawkman feature ceased in the final issue of Flash Comics in 1949, as the popularity of superheroes waned in the late 1940s. The Flash was revived by DC Comics in 1956, when the character was given a new identity and background. Following the popularity of the new Flash, DC Comics reintroduced Hawkman in 1961 with The Brave and the Bold #34. Hawkman and Hawkgirl in the Silver Age were married extraterrestrial police officials from the planet Thanagar who travelled to Earth to learn police methods. Shayera Hol (phonetically identical to Shiera Hall) is the Silver Age Hawkgirl’s first appearance, and she is dressed in costume. Although Silver Age Hawkman joined the Justice League in Justice League of America #31 in 1964, Silver Age Hawkgirl was not granted membership since the Justice League only accepted one new member at a time. In the Hawkman backup storey of World’s Finest Comics #274 in 1981, Silver Age Hawkgirl changed her name to Hawkwoman.
