Mike Mignola, a writer and illustrator, invented the fictitious character Hellboy. San Diego Comic-Con Comics #2 (August 1993) was the character’s debut appearance, and he has subsequently featured in a number of eponymous miniseries, one-shots, and intercompany crossovers. Three live-action feature films have been made on the figure. Two straight-to-DVD animated films, and three video games ” Asylum Seeker, The Science of Evil, and as a playable character in Injustice 2 ” starred Ron Perlman in the title role in 2004 and 2008, and one in 2019 starring David Harbour, as well as two straight-to-DVD animated films, and three video games ” Asylum Seeker, The Science of Evil, and as a playable character in Injustice 2.

Hellboy was called from Hell to Earth as a newborn by Nazi occultists. His actual name is Anung Un Rama (“and upon his forehead is put a crown of flame”) (spawning his hatred for the Third Reich). Professor Trevor Bruttenholm, who founded the United States Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, was among the Allied Forces that discovered him on a fictitious Outer Hebrides Island (B.P.R.D.). Hellboy evolved into a huge, red-skinned adult with a tail, horns (which he polishes off, leaving round stumps on his forehead), cloven hooves for feet, and an enormous stone right hand (the “Right Hand of Doom”). His scent has been characterised as dry-roasted peanuts. He is a touch harsh, but he lacks the hostility associated with classical demons and has an ironic sense of humour. This is claimed to be due to Professor Bruttenholm’s parents, who reared him as a regular youngster.

Hellboy fights evil forces such as Nazis and witches for the B.P.R.D., a worldwide non-governmental organisation, and for himself in a series of stories inspired by folklore, pulp magazines, vintage adventure, Lovecraftian horror, and horror literature. He’s been referred to as the “World’s Greatest Paranormal Investigator” in previous articles.

Hellboy, also known as “Anung Un Rama,” was born on October 5, 1617, the day before his birth–mother, Sarah Hughes, a human woman, died. Sarah was a witch in real life who obtained her abilities as a consort of the archdemon Azzael, an Archduke of Hell and Hellboy’s “biological” father. When Sarah tried to repent on her deathbed at a chapel in East Bromwich, England, Azzael burnt her to death so their child could be born, then cut off the newborn’s right hand and replaced it with the “Right Hand of Doom,” a relic linked to the Ogdru Jahad. When the other princes of Hell learnt of his deeds, Azzael banished his half-demon kid while being stripped of his powers and imprisoned in ice (much like Lucifer in Dante’s Divine Comedy).

The kid is finally brought to Earth by the “Mad Monk” Grigori Rasputin on Tarmagant Island, off the coast of Scotland, in the closing months of World War II, having been commissioned by the Nazis to turn the tide of a losing war (“Project Ragna Rok”). On December 23, 1944, the kid comes on Earth in a fireball at what remains of the wrecked Bromwich Church as a direct result of this ceremony. Professor Trevor “Broom” Bruttenholm called the youngster “Hellboy” after proving that he was not a demon in the conventional sense, but rather a devil-like creature.

The US Armed Forces take Hellboy to an Air Force base in New Mexico, where Professor Trevor Bruttenholm raises him in as normal a home environment as possible (and as a Catholic), and the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD), a private organisation dedicated to combating occult threats, begins. Hellboy is awarded “honorary human” status by the United Nations after accomplishing his first mission in 1952, and he joins the BPRD as the “world’s best paranormal investigator.” As a result, Hellboy meets with people daily, mostly with law enforcement officers, the military, and different “scholars of the odd,” the majority of whom aren’t seen responding to his peculiar look.
