web hosting service is an Internet hosting service that allows people and businesses to make their websites available over the Internet. Web hosts are organisations that offer clients space on a server that they own or lease and Internet access, usually in a data centre. Colocation, often known as housing in Latin America or France, is when a web host provides data centre space and Internet access to other servers in their data centre.

Until 1991, the Internet was limited to “… research and education in the sciences and engineering…” and was mostly used for email, telnet, FTP, and USENET traffic”with only a few web sites. The World Wide Web protocols had only recently been established, and a graphical web browser for Mac or Windows systems would not be available until the end of 1993. Even when limited internet connection was made available, the situation remained perplexing until 1995.

An person or corporation would require their own computer or server to host a website on the internet. Web hosting services began to offer to host customers’ websites on their own servers, without the client having to possess the necessary equipment to operate the website, because not all organisations had the budget or knowledge to do so. Webmasters, or owners of websites, would be able to construct a website that would be housed on the web hosting service’s server and published to the internet by the web hosting service.

The demand on organisations, large and small, to establish an online presence rose as the number of users on the World Wide Web expanded. Companies like GeoCities, Angelfire, and Tripod were providing free hosting by 1995.

The host may also provide an interface or control panel for controlling the Web server and additional modules and service applications such as e-mail. A “headless” server is one that does not utilise a control panel to manage the hosting account. Some hosts are experts in certain software or services (e.g. e-commerce, blogs, etc.).

The proportion of a year that a website is publicly available and reachable through the Internet is used to determine its availability. This is not the same as determining a system’s uptime. The term “uptime” refers to the system’s availability. In the case of a network outage, uptime does not include the ability to contact it.

A hosting company’s Service Level Agreement (SLA) may contain a set amount of scheduled downtime per year for system maintenance. This scheduled downtime is frequently omitted from the SLA timeframe and must be deducted from the Total Time when calculating availability. Suppose a system’s availability falls below that stated in the signed SLA. In that case, a hosting provider may offer a partial reimbursement for the period missed, depending on the language of the SLA.

Because the method for calculating downtime differs from provider to provider, it’s critical to read the SLA. Not all service providers publish uptime data. Most hosting companies will promise at least 99.9% uptime, allowing for 43 minutes of downtime per month or 8 hours and 45 minutes per year.
