The history of the Houston Texans is limited, considering that they were founded in 2002 as an expansion team. The Texans were created after the original Houston Oilers were moved to Tennessee and became the Tennessee Titans. Houston Oilers moved to Tennessee in favor of owner Bud Adams. The move prompted Houston to dry spell without a professional football team, considering that the NFL wasn’t adding a team at the time. Instead, Bob McNair, who worked hard to bring NHL into the city, founded Houston NFL Holdings, headed by McNair’s fellow Steve Patterson.

In 1997, a report issued on the Houston, Los Angeles, and Cleveland expansion teams’ appeal. The move of the Browns to Baltimore has made Cleveland a promised destination for the next expansion team. This adds up to 31 NFL teams in the league. Commissioner Paul Tagliabue praised McNair and Patterson’s efforts, including the decision to build a domed stadium to lure the NFL back to returning the team to Houston. Within the next three years, the Cleveland Browns were given a new team, and the NFL decided to add a team to either Los Angeles, Toronto, or Houston. This worried many of Houston’s football fans, television and advertising revenues are now the big part of football. They were almost convinced that the NFL would not turn down the opportunity to have a team in Los Angeles, the second-largest television market in the United States.

In 1999, it was decided that L.A. would acquire an extended franchise, but only if it could sign the stadium with the ownership team by September 15 of that year. Two groups of L.A. are facing standoffs, and progress has stagnated as the tax amount was not allowed to be used for the new stadium. At this point, they realized that L.A. wasn’t as ready to host an NFL franchise as Houston. Houston already had the proper people’s plans for the state-of-the-art stadium and team ownership and franchise building. Houston officials were told to attend a meeting in Atlanta with the owners of the NFL, at which point the L.A. group bid for a new franchise for $540 million. However, McNair had better financial resources and wisdom, bidding $700 million for the franchise, thus granting the franchise and the rights to the 2004 Super Bowl game.
