Terry Eugene Bollea is an American television personality and retired professional wrestler, better known by his ring name Hulk Hogan. He is “the best recognisable wrestling star globally and the most popular wrestler of the 1980s,” according to IGN.

Hogan began his professional wrestling career in 1977, but it wasn’t until 1983, when he signed with the World Wrestling Federation (WWF, now WWE), that he earned international fame. He headlined eight of the first nine editions of the WWF’s main yearly event, WrestleMania, as a heroic all-American, helping usher in the 1980s professional wrestling boom. He won the WWF Championship five times during his first reign, and his first reign was the second-longest in WWF history. He is the first wrestler to win the Royal Rumble in consecutive years, in 1990 and 1991.

Hogan left the WWF in 1993 to join World Championship Wrestling, a rival organisation (WCW). He holds the record for the longest reign as the WCW World Heavyweight Champion, winning the title six times. He had a professional rebirth in 1996 when he took on the villainous character as “Hollywood” Hulk Hogan and became the leader of the successful New World Order (NWO) stable. As a result, during the “Monday Night Wars,” another boom in mainstream professional wrestling, he became a significant character. He headlined at WCW’s annual flagship event Starrcade three times, including Starrcade ’97, the most successful WCW pay-per-view history.

Following WWE’s acquisition of WCW the previous year, Hogan returned to the company in 2002, capturing the WWE Championship for a record-tying (for the year) sixth time before quitting in 2003. In 2005, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame, and in 2020, he was inducted again as a member of the NWO.

Hogan also wrestled for the American Wrestling Association (AWA), New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW), and Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNAW), where he won the first IWGP Heavyweight Championship (TNA).

Hogan had a successful acting career both during and after his wrestling career, beginning with a cameo appearance in Rocky III in 1982. He has appeared in several films and television series, including Hogan Knows Best, Thunder in Paradise, China, IL, and Right Guard ads and the video game Hulk Hogan’s Main Event. He was the lead singer for The Wrestling Boot Band, whose only album, Hulk Rules, charted at No. 12 on the Billboard Top Kid Audio chart in 1995.

On August 11, 1953, Terry Eugene Bollea was born in Augusta, Georgia, the son of Italian-American construction foreman Pietro “Peter” Bollea (December 6, 1913 ” December 18, 2001) and homemaker and dance instructor Ruth V. (née Moody; 1922 ” January 1, 2011). Bollea is descended from Scottish, French, and Panamanian ancestors. His family relocated to Port Tampa, Florida, when he was one and a half years old. He was a pitcher in Little League Baseball as a kid. He drew the attention of scouts from the New York Yankees and the Cincinnati Reds, but his baseball career was cut short due to an injury. At the age of 16, he began watching professional wrestling. He idolised Dusty Rhodes in high school and used to go to his games at the Tampa Sportatorium. Hogan initially turned his attention to Superstar Billy Graham and looked to him for inspiration at one of those wrestling events; ever since he first saw Graham on TV, he wanted to emulate his “inhuman” image.

Hogan was also a musician, having spent a decade in numerous Florida-based rock bands playing fretless bass guitar. He moved on to Hillsborough Community College and the University of South Florida to further his education. Hogan chose to drop out of the University of South Florida before completing his degree because music engagements began to interfere with his studies. In 1976, Hogan and two other local musicians established the Ruckus band. The band quickly gained a following in the Tampa Bay area. Hogan began lifting at Hector’s Gym in the Tampa Bay region, where he worked out in his leisure time. Many of the wrestlers competing in the Florida area went to the pubs where Ruckus was playing. Jack and Gerald Brisco, two brothers who wrestled as a tag team in the Florida region, were among those who attended his shows.
