Yoona, whose real name is Im Yoon-ah, is a South Korean singer and actor. She debuted in August 2007 as a member of the girl group Girls’ Generation, who went on to become one of South Korea’s best-selling artists and one of the world’s most successful female groups after five years of training. Aside from her group’s activities, Yoona has appeared in a number of television dramas, the most notable of which being You Are My Destiny (2008), which marked her professional debut and garnered her Best New Actress prizes at the 23rd KBS Drama Awards and the 45th Baeksang Arts Awards.

Yoona has now gained more public notice and performance accolades in films including as Love Rain (2012), Prime Minister & I (2013), The K2 (2016), The King in Love (2017), and Hush (2020″21). Confidential Assignment (2017) and Exit (2019), both of which are among the highest-grossing pictures in South Korea, are among her cinematic credits; the latter is her first main role.

Yoona celebrated her 29th birthday (30th in Korean age) on May 30, 2019, with the release of her first extended play A Walk to Remember, which debuted at number three on the Gaon Album Chart in South Korea.

Yoona’s music and acting talents have led to multiple CF partnerships, including one with long-time collaborator Innisfree, and have established her as a prominent Hallyu idol-actress.

Yoona has been in a number of television dramas in addition to her work with Girls’ Generation. In 2007, she made her acting debut in MBC’s drama Two Outs in the Ninth Inning, in which she had a minor role. She later had a cameo appearance in MBC’s Woman of Matchless Beauty (2008), for which veteran actor Bae Jong-ok praised her.

Yoona got her first main role in the KBS drama You Are My Destiny in May 2008, playing Jang Sae-byuk. Yoona got broader popular exposure as a result of the drama, which garnered up to 41.5 percent viewing ratings. She earned two “Best New Actress” prizes at the 2008 KBS Drama Awards and the 45th Baeksang Arts Awards for the part, which she deemed a career-defining performance. Yoona was cast alongside Kwon Sang-woo in MBC’s drama Cinderella Man in 2009.

Yoona was cast in the lead role with Jang Geun Suk in KBS2’s drama Love Rain in March 2012, a fantasy drama about fate in which the progeny of an ill-fated couple who met in the 1970s meet and fall in love in the present day. Yoona portrayed two characters: a 1970s Yun-hee and a modern-day Ha-na. Yoona’s performance got high reviews, despite the drama’s poor domestic audience and criticism for failing to connect with viewers. OSEN’s Yoon Ga-ee wrote: “Her acting is growing at such a breakneck pace. Her acting has improved to the point that you wonder, ‘When did she get so good?’ The negativity that followed her around throughout Cinderella Man has vanished.” Hankook Ilbo’s Choi In-kyung claimed Yoona’s acting was growing all the time, and “Yoona is thoroughly involved in her role and has now become ‘Hana’ herself.” Because of Yoona’s prominence, the drama attracted a lot of favorable outside attention and was sold to Japan for $10 million, the second highest price for a KBS drama at the time.

Yoona debuted with Lee Beom-soo in KBS2’s romantic comedy drama Prime Minister & I in December 2013. Yoona played Nam Da-jung, a young and headstrong reporter who falls in love with the prime minister, in a film loosely based on the musical classic The Sound of Music. Although the drama got poor ratings, Yoona’s performance was lauded, and she received an Excellence Award for the part at the 2013 KBS Drama Awards.
