August 15 is celebrated as the Independence Day of India. On August 15, 1947, India gained independence from the British Empire. The day is celebrated every year on August 15 as a national holiday in the country.

The country gained independence from foreign rule after several years of struggle and independence, led by various freedom fighters. The movement for independence, marked mainly by non-violent resistance and civil disobedience, was led by Mahatma Gandhi.

The independence of India also led to the division of the country into two parts. The British Indian Empire was divided along religious lines in the homes of India and Pakistan. The division was accompanied by violent unrest and mass casualties and the displacement of more than 15 million people.

August 15, 1947 Jawaharlal Nehru, who became the first prime minister of India, raised the Indian national flag above the Lahori Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi. On each subsequent day of independence, the Prime Minister raised the flag and delivered a speech on the same podium.

The day is celebrated across the country with ceremonies, parades and many cultural events.
