An inkwell is a small jar or container, often made of glass, porcelain, silver, copper or tin, used to store ink in a place for the person who is writing. An artist or writer dips the a brush, quill, or dip pen in the inkwell as needed, or uses the inkwell as a source to fill the reservoir of a fountain pen. Inkwell usually has a lid to prevent contamination, evaporation, accidental spills and excessive exposure to air. The type, known as travelling inkwell, is equipped with a secure, screw lid, so that the traveler can carry ink in their baggage without any risk of leakage.

The origin of inkwell can be traced back to ancient Egypt, where writers write on papyrus. Knowledge of hieroglyphs at that time was very limited. Only the scribes knew the full set of hieroglyphs and wrote on behalf of their employers, usually Pharaoh. After Rome invaded Egypt, inkwells are becoming increasingly popular in Italy, as a larger percentage of the population were capable of writing.
