The act of configuring a computer software for execution (including device drivers and plugins) is known as installation (or setup). The term “installation” refers to the process of configuring software or hardware so that it may be used with a computer. To install the software (application), you’ll need a soft or digital copy of it. Installing a piece of software may be done in a variety of ways (program).
Because the procedure differs for each program and computer, programs (including operating systems) frequently include an installer, a specialized software that performs whatever installation tasks are required. Installation may be part of a wider software distribution procedure.
Code (software) is copied/generated from the installation files to new files on the local computer for better access by the operating system. Appropriate directories are created, environment variables are registered, and a separate application for un-installation is provided, among other things. Because code is frequently copied/generated in numerous locations, uninstalling a software typically entails more than simply deleting the application folder. For a full uninstallation, registry files and other system code, for example, may need to be changed or removed.
Some computer applications may be run by simply copying them to a folder and running them from there. Other applications are sent in a format that makes them unsuitable for instant operation, necessitating an installation method. The software may be run repeatedly after it has been installed, without the need to reinstall it each time.
Some computer programs, as previously said, do not require installation. This was formerly standard for many DOS, Mac OS, Atari TOS, and AmigaOS apps. The necessity for physical installation arose as computing systems became more sophisticated and fixed hard drives replaced floppy disks. For example, Commodore released the Amiga Installer.
Portable apps are a modern program that does not require installation and may be moved from one computer to another. Similar to thin clients, live operating systems exist that do not require installation and may be operated straight from a bootable CD, DVD, or USB flash drive. AmigaOS 4.0, numerous Linux variants, MorphOS, and Mac OS versions 1.0 through 9.0 are examples. (For further information, see live CD and live USB.) Finally, online apps do not require installation because they operate within a web browser.
