Intel Corporation is a global corporation and technology firm located in Silicon Valley in Santa Clara, California. It is the world’s largest semiconductor chip maker in terms of sales, and it is the creator of the x86 series of microprocessors, which are used in the majority of personal computers (PCs). Intel, based in Delaware, was placed No. 45 on the Fortune 500 list of the biggest US businesses by total sales for nearly a decade, from the fiscal years 2007 to 2016.

Microprocessors are provided by Intel to computer system makers such as LenovoHP, and Dell. Intel also makes motherboard chipsets, network interface controllers, integrated circuits, flash memory, graphics chips, embedded CPUs, and other communications and computer equipment.

Intel was created on July 18, 1968, by Gordon Moore (of Moore’s law) and Robert Noyce, and is closely connected with Andrew Grove’s executive leadership and vision. With co-founder Noyce having been a significant creator of the integrated circuit, the company’s name was developed as a portmanteau of the words integrated and electronics (microchip).

The name was also fitting because “intel” is a word for intelligence information. Intel was a pioneer in developing SRAM and DRAM memory chips, which accounted for the majority of the company’s revenue until 1981.

Even though Intel developed the world’s first commercial microprocessor chip in 1971, it was not until the success of the personal computer (PC) that this became the company’s core business.

During the 1990s, Intel spent a lot of money into innovative microprocessor designs, which helped the computer industry develop quickly. Intel became the dominant supplier of microprocessors for PCs during this time, and was known for using aggressive and anti-competitive tactics to defend its market position, particularly against Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), as well as a battle with Microsoft for control of the PC industry’s direction.

PowerTOP and LatencyTOP are hosted by Intel’s Open Source Technology Center, which also supports other open-source projects including Wayland, Mesa, Threading Building Blocks (TBB), and Xen.

According to IDC, Intel had the most market share in both the total global PC microprocessor market (73.3%) and the mobile PC microprocessor market (80.4%) in the second quarter of 2011, however these percentages were down 1.5 percent and 1.9 percent from the first quarter.

As of 2019, Intel’s market share in the enthusiast market had dropped substantially, and their 10 nm devices had been delayed. The delay was caused, according to Intel CEO Bob Swan, by the company’s too ambitious approach for advancing to its next node.
