Chan has a global following in both the Eastern and Western hemispheres, and is one of the most well-known and influential cinema characters in the world. On the Hong Kong Avenue of Stars and the Hollywood Walk of Fame, he has been honored with stars. He’s been mentioned in a number of music songs, cartoons, movies, and video games.

He is a Cantopop and Mandopop celebrity who has released a number of albums and sang many of the theme songs for the films in which he has acted. He is also a well-known philanthropist, having been named one of Forbes magazine’s top ten most philanthropic celebrities.

Chan was born in Hong Kong on April 7, 1954, as Chan Kong-sang (Chinese: ; lit. ‘born in Hong Kong’) to Chinese Civil War refugees Charles and Lee-Lee Chan. His parents were so impoverished that they had to rely on friends to help them pay the doctor. Because the lively youngster was continually rolling around, his parents nicknamed him Pao-pao (Chinese: ; lit. ‘Cannonball’). Chan grew up on the grounds of the consul’s home in the Victoria Peak neighborhood, where his parents worked for the French ambassador in Hong Kong.

Chan went to the Nah-Hwa Primary School on Hong Kong Island, where he failed his first year, after which his parents withdrew him from the school. Chan was sent to the China Drama Academy, a Peking Opera School operated by Master Yu Jim-yuen, when his father relocated to Canberra, Australia, to serve as the chief cook for the American embassy in 1960. Chan put in a decade of hard work, excelling in martial arts and acrobatics.

He later joined the Seven Little Fortunes, a performance group made up of the brightest students at the school, and took the stage name Yuen Lo in honor of his instructor. Chan became close friends with fellow band members Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao, and the three of them were dubbed the “Three Brothers” or “Three Dragons” later on. Chan and Sammo Hung were given the opportunity to learn in hapkido under grand master Jin Pal Kim after entering the film industry, and Chan finally earned a black belt.

Chan moved to Canberra, Australia, with his parents in 1976, where he attended Dickson College and worked as a construction worker. Chan was given the nickname “Little Jack” by a fellow builder called Jack, who eventually shortened it to “Jackie,” which has remained with him ever since. Chan changed his Chinese name to Fang Shilong (Cantonese: Fong Si-lung) in the late 1990s, as his father’s surname was Fang. They are Tang dynasty descendants of Fang Xuanling, a chancellor.
