James Peter Maxwell Dornan is a Northern Irish actor, model, and musician. His work in independent cinema and television is frequently character-driven, as he was formerly a character actor. He has been nominated for a BAFTA Television Award and has won two Irish Film and Television Awards. He was ranked number 32 on The Irish Times’ list of the finest Irish cinema performers of all time in 2020.

He began his modeling career in 2001, and has since appeared in campaigns for Hugo Boss, Dior Homme, and Calvin Klein. The New York Times dubbed him “the Golden Torso,” and Vogue named him one of the “25 Biggest Male Models of All Time” in 2015. In addition, until 2008, he was a member of the folk band Sons of Jim.

He began acting in 2006 and rose to worldwide prominence for his roles as Sheriff Graham Humbert on Once Upon a Time (2011″2013) and serial murderer Paul Spector on The Fall (2013″2016). He was nominated for a British Academy Television Award for Best Actor and won the Irish Film and Television Award for Best Actor in Television for the latter. He starred as Axel von Fersen in Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette (2006), Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades trilogy (2015″2018), and Jan Kubi in Anthropoid (2016).

Dornan grew raised in the Belfast suburbs after being born in Holywood, County Down, Northern Ireland. Lorna, Dornan’s mother, died of pancreatic cancer when he was 16 years old. On March 15, 2021, his father Jim Dornan, an obstetrician and gynecologist who had pondered becoming an actor, died of COVID-19-related complications.

Liesa, who works for Disney in London, and Jessica, a fashion designer located in Falmouth, Cornwall, England, are Dornan’s elder sisters. Greer Garson’s first cousin twice removed, he is his cousin. On both sides of his family, his grandfather were Methodist lay preachers.

He went to Methodist College Belfast and boarded there, where he played rugby and was involved in the theatrical department. In high school, he played Widow Twanky in a Christmas Pantomime, earning him his first drama award. During school plays, he also played Baby Face in Bugsy Malone and the milkman in Blood Brothers. He was a member of Belfast’s Holywood Players, a young amateur theatrical company, and with them he took part in the Ballymoney Drama Festival on multiple times. From the age of twelve, he performed in Anton Chekhov’s stage works in his own country.

In 2002, he dropped out of Teesside University to pursue acting training in London. He worked at a Knightsbridge pub for six months before starting his modeling career. Dornan described those six months as “tough,” claiming that he was in such financial distress that he couldn’t afford to buy even a kettle for his leased apartment, and that in order to make ends meet, he accepted a job at the bar.
