Katy Perry, whose real name is Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, is an American singer, songwriter, and television judge. She sought a career in gospel music as a teenager after singing in church as a youngster. Perry signed with Red Hill Records and released her first studio album under her real name, Katy Hudson, in 2001, which was a commercial flop. She traveled to Los Angeles the next year after Red Hill halted operations to pursue a secular music career, and she began working with producers Glen Ballard, Dr. Luke, and Max Martin. She secured a recording contract with Capitol Records in April 2007 after adopting the stage name ‘Katy Perry’ (after her mother’s maiden name) and being dropped by The Island Def Jam Music Group and Columbia Records.

Perry rose to prominence in 2008 with the release of her second album, One of the Boys, a pop rock album that included the controversial number one singles “I Kissed a Girl” and “Hot n Cold” in the United States. Three more albums have topped the Billboard 200 in the United States. Teenage Dream (2010), a disco-influenced album that yielded five Billboard Hot 100 singles””California Gurls”, “Teenage Dream”, “Firework”, “E.T.”, and “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)””became the first album by a woman to accomplish so, and tied her with Michael Jackson’s Bad. Teenage Dream was dubbed “one of the defining LPs from a new golden period in mega-pop” by Billboard. The chart-topping song “Part of Me” and “Wide Awake” were included on a reissue titled Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection (2012). Prism (2013), the band’s follow-up album, combines pop and dance with themes of self-reflection, everyday life, and relationships, and received generally positive reviews. Perry became the first artist to have several Vevo videos exceed one billion views with the music videos for his chart-topping songs “Roar” and “Dark Horse.” Witness, a 2017 electropop album, with a political undercurrent and a liberation messageSmile, her sixth studio album, was released in 2020, and it marked a return to her pop origins.

Perry is one of the best-selling musicians in the world, with over 143 million albums sold worldwide. Her music has been credited with influencing the 2010s pop sound and style. She has nine number one hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and has won several accolades, including four Guinness World Records, five Billboard Music Awards, five American Music Awards, a Brit Award, and a Juno Award. From 2011 until 2019, Perry was named to Forbes’ annual list of the highest-paid women in music. Her net worth is believed to be $125 million as of 2016. Katy Perry: Part of Me, an autobiographical documentary, was published in 2012, and she voiced Smurfette in the 2011 film The Smurfs and its sequel in 2013. Her halftime presentation in the Super Bowl is the most watched in history. In 2018, Perry began acting as a judge on American Idol.

Mary Christine (née Perry) and Maurice Keith Hudson, Pentecostal pastors, gave birth to Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson on October 25, 1984, in Santa Barbara, California. Her parents are both born again Christians who came to faith after a “wild adolescence.” Perry’s ancestors are from England, Germany, Ireland, and Portugal. She is a niece of film director Frank Perry through her mother. She has an elder sister, Angela, and a younger brother, David, who is a singer.

Perry travelled around a lot as a child, from the age of three to eleven, while her parents established churches around the country before settling back in Santa Barbara. During her primary school years, she attended religious institutions and camps, including Paradise Valley Christian School in Arizona and Santa Barbara Christian School in California. Perry’s family suffered financially, at times relying on food stamps and eating from a food bank that simultaneously served the congregation of her parents’ church.

Perry and her siblings were not permitted to consume Lucky Charms as children since the term “luck” reminded their mother of Lucifer, and they were forced to refer to deviled eggs as “angeled eggs.” Perry mostly listened to evangelical music because secular music was frowned upon in his household. She learned about popular music by stealing CDs from her pals. “I pray all the time ” for self-control, for humility,” she has said, despite not identifying as religious. Perry began singing with her sister’s cassette tapes in order to imitate her sister Angela. She sang the songs in front of their parents, who allowed her to start vocal lessons at the same time as Angela. She began her training when she was nine years old and was absorbed into her parents’ ministry, singing in church from the age of nine to seventeen. Perry received her first guitar for her 13th birthday and sang songs she had written in front of an audience. She grew up trying to “be a little like a typical Californian girl,” and as a teenager began rollerskating, skateboarding, and surfing. During her teens, her brother David described her as a tomboy. She learnt how to swing, Lindy Hop, and jitterbug through dance classes.
