Katy Perry, whose real name is Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson, is an American singer, songwriter, and television judge. She sought a career in gospel music as a teenager after singing in church as a youngster. Perry signed with Red Hill Records and released her first studio album under her real name, Katy Hudson, in 2001, which was a commercial flop. Perry became the first artist to have several Vevo videos exceed one billion views with the music videos for his chart-topping songs “Roar” and “Dark Horse.” Witness, a 2017 electropop album, with a political undercurrent and a liberation message. Smile, her sixth studio album, was released in 2020, and it marked a return to her pop origins.

Mary Christine (née Perry) and Maurice Keith Hudson, Pentecostal pastors, gave birth to Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson on October 25, 1984, in Santa Barbara, California. Her parents are both born again Christians who came to faith after a “wild adolescence.” Perry’s ancestors are from England, Germany, Ireland, and Portugal. She is a niece of film director Frank Perry through her mother. She has an elder sister, Angela, and a younger brother, David, who is a singer.

Perry travelled around a lot as a child, from the age of three to eleven, while her parents established churches around the country before settling back in Santa Barbara. During her primary school years, she attended religious institutions and camps, including Paradise Valley Christian School in Arizona and Santa Barbara Christian School in California. Perry’s family suffered financially, at times relying on food stamps and eating from a food bank that simultaneously served the congregation of her parents’ church.
