Elizabeth Woolridge Grant (born June 21, 1985), known by her stage name Lana Del Rey, is an American singer and songwriter. Her music has a stylized cinematic quality, themes of tragic romance, glamor, and melancholia, and pop culture references, especially America in the 1950s and 1960s.

Del Rey was born in New York and raised in New York upstate. In 2005, she returned to New York to start her musical career. After numerous projects, including her self-titled debut studio album, Del Rey’s breakout saw the viral success of her debut single, “Video Games” in 2011. Later that year, she signed with Interscope and Polydor. Her major debut on Born to Die (2012) was an international success and spawned the top 10 singles “Summertime Sadness” on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as the singles “Blue Jeans” and “Born to Die,” which were released in several foreign countries. Del Rey released the EP Paradise in 2012. The following year, Del Rey went to film, wrote scripts, and starred in the short musical Tropico; she released “Young and Beautiful” as the lead single of the romantic drama “The Great Gatsby” (2013).

Del Rey released her third album Ultraviolence (2014), to critical success. It topped the charts and spawned the single “West Coast.” In the same year, Del Rey recorded the theme of the same name for the drama film Big Eyes, which received a Golden Globe nomination. She released the albums Honeymoon in 2015 and Lust for Life in 2017, the latter topping the US Billboard 200. Her sixth album, Norman Fucking Rockwell! (2019), received widespread critical acclaim and received two Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year. In 2019, Del Rey released the singles “Doin ‘Time” and “Don’t Call Me Angel,” the latter being the result of collaboration with Ariana Grande and Miley Cyrus for the soundtrack to the movie Charlie’s Angels (2019). In 2020, Del Rey reissued her first collection of poems, The Violet Leaning Back Over the Grass, as well as an accompanying album of spoken words.

By 2020, Del Rey has sold 19.1 million albums and over 13 million singles worldwide, and her YouTube and Vevo pages have combined 4.1 billion. Her awards include two Brit Awards, two MTV Europe Music Awards, a Satellite Award, nine GAFFA Awards, six Grammy Awards, and a Golden Globe nomination.

Del Rey was born to Elizabeth Woolridge Grant on June 21, 1985, in Manhattan, New York, to Robert England Grant, Jr., a copywriter for the Gray Group, and Patricia Ann “Pat” (née Hill), director of Gray Group accounts. She has a younger sister, Caroline, and a younger brother, Charlie. She was raised Roman Catholic and of Scottish descent. Her ancestors were from Lanarkshire.
