Law is a set of rules developed and enforced by social or political organizations to control conduct, and its precise meaning has long been a source of contention. It’s been called a science and an art, among other things. State-enforced laws can be enacted by a group of legislators or a single lawmaker, resulting in statutes, by the executive, via decrees and regulations, or by judges, generally in common law jurisdictions, through precedent. Individuals can make legally enforceable contracts, such as arbitration agreements, that use a different method of settling disputes than traditional court action. A constitution, whether written or unwritten and the rights enshrined within may affect the formation of legislation. The law influences politics, economy, history, and society in a variety of ways and acts as a bridge between individuals.

Comparative law examines the variations in legal systems between countries. A legislative or other central authority codifies and consolidates the law in civil law jurisdictions. Judges in common law systems establish binding case law through precedent. However this can be reversed by a higher court or the legislature on rare occasions. Religious law has affected secular affairs in the past, and it is still utilized in some religious groups today. In some nations, notably Iran and Saudi Arabia, Sharia law, based on Islamic precepts, is utilized as the dominant legal system.

The scope of law can be split into two categories. Constitutional law, administrative law, and criminal law are all areas of public law that deal with government and society. Contracts, property, torts/delicts, and commercial law are all aspects of private law that deal with legal conflicts between persons and/or organizations. This division is more evident in civil law nations, particularly those with a separate administrative court system; in common law countries, however, the public-private law divide is less pronounced.

Law may be used to do research in legal history, philosophy, economics, and sociology. Equally significant and complicated problems of equality, fairness, and justice are likewise raised by the law.

Jurisprudence is the term for the philosophy of law. The question of normative jurisprudence is “what should the law be?” whereas the question of analytic jurisprudence is “what is law?”

Several attempts have been made to provide “a universally accepted definition of law.” In 1972, Baron Hampstead said that such a concept was impossible to come up with. According to McCoubrey and White, there is no easy solution to the question “what is law?” According to Glanville Williams, the meaning of the word “law” is determined by the context in which it is employed. He cited “early customary law” and “municipal law” as examples of settings where the word “law” had two distinct and incompatible meanings. Thurman Arnold stated that it is self-evident that defining the term “law” is difficult, but it is also self-evident that the fight to define that term should never be abandoned. It is conceivable to argue that the term “law” does not need to be defined (e.g., “let’s forget about generalities and get down to instances”).
