Life Is Strange is an episodic graphic adventure video game developed by Dontnod Entertainment and published by Square Enix for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, iOS, and Android. The game was released in five episodes periodically in 2015.

The plot focuses on Max Caulfield, an 18-year-old photography student, who discovers that she has the ability to rewind time at any time, leading her every choice to verify a butterfly effect. The player’s actions will correct the story as it unfolds and change it once allowed to go back in time. Retrieving quests and making environmental changes depicts the forms of puzzle solving in addition to using conversation branches.

Development of Life Is Strange began in April 2013. It was formed in a disparate format in mind for financial and creative reasons. The developers conducted field studies of the situation, traveling across the Pacific Northwest and undermining certain archetypes to create characters. Player feedback influenced the adjustments made to the episodes. A rainbow of story and character serves as the center of the game.

Life Is Strange received generally positive reviews during its release, recommending character development, rewinding game mechanics, and tackling taboo topics. Frequent criticisms include the use of jargon, incorrect timing, and tonal inconsistencies in the story. The game has received over 75 awards and was voted Game of the Year. As of May 2017, it has sold over three million copies. The prequel to Life Is Strange: Before the Storm was released in August 2017, and the sequel to Life Is Strange two was released in September 2018.

The player can explore various locations in the fictional setting of Arcadia Bay and interact with non-playable characters. The exchange dialogue can be rewound while the branching options are used for the conversation. Once the event is reset, previously provided information can be used in the future. In some cases, the choices in the dialogue will change and affect the story through short or long-term consequences. For every election, something good in the short run may be worse later.

Life Is Strange is set in the fictional city of Arcadia Bay, Oregon, and is told from the perspective of Maxine “Max” Caulfield (Hannah Telle), a twelfth-grade student who attends Blackwell Academy in October 2013.
