Lifebuoy is a brand of soap available marketed by Unilever. Initially, Lifebuoy for most of its history was a phenolic carbolic soap (carbolic acid, a compound extracted from coal tar). Soaps produced today under the Lifebuoy brand do not contain phenol. There are many lifebuoy variants right now.

Lifebuoy was introduced by Lever Brothers in 1895 in England. Originally a phenolic carbolic soap, various varieties were later introduced without the medicinal carbolic smell, such as the color of Lifebuoy coral-coloured in the late 1950s and Lifebuoy Minty Refresher in 1966.

Lifebuoy was one of the most popular soaps in the United States from around 1923 until the mid-1950s, when perfumed soap captured the market. It was the best-selling medicinal/therapeutic soap in North America until about 1951. It was well known for its red-yellow packaging, red color and octagonal shape, as well as its carbolic flavor.

Its popularity declined steadily in the 1950s. In the mid/late 1960s, there was a surge in popularity that would last until 1973. This is partly due to the appearance and success of Lifebuoy White in the US market. After this fall, the Lifebuoy brand was seen less and less visible in the US market. It was pulled from American shelves since 2003, and completely removed from the US market by 2006.

At some point in 2008 or 2009, Unilever launched Lifebuoy Classic, a modern retro-packaged soap and medicinal aroma designed in a similar way. To the product of 1950. It saw the success of the novelty but was never accepted as the main product in the American home. Currently, it is mainly produced as a gift reminiscent of a Christmas Story and is currently sold in the official A Christmas Story website gift shop.

Although Lifebuoy is no longer manufactured in the US and the UK, it is still mass-produced by Unilever in Cyprus for the UK, EU, US and Brazil, Trinidad and Tobago markets for the Caribbean and India for the Asian market, and Unilever in Cyprus, Trinidad and Tobago produces soap Red Redbuoy with Carbola flavor, but since 1976 it no longer contains phenol.

Lifebuoy soap, manufactured in India and Indonesia for other markets, including South and Southeast Asia, has been updated to use red and different colors with “modern” aromas.
