A lock is a mechanical or electronic fastening device that is opened by a physical object (such as a key, keycard, fingerprint, RFID card, security token, coin, etc. ), secret information (such as a number or letter permutation or password), or a combination thereof, or can only be opened from one side (such as a door chain).

A key is a piece of equipment used to open a lock (such as to lock or unlock it). A standard key is a tiny piece of metal with two parts: a bit or blade that goes into the lock’s keyway and distinguishes between various keys, and a bow that is left projecting so that the user may apply torque. A key operates one lock or a series of locks that are keyed alike in the simplest form, a lock/key system in which each similarly keyed lock requires the same, unique key.

The key acts as a security token for access to the closed area; locks are designed to be opened and accessed only by those with the right key. Two separate keys, known as the master key, are used to unlock the lock in more complicated mechanical lock/key systems. Brass, plated brass, nickel silver, and steel are all common metals.

Locks have been around for almost 6000 years, with one of the earliest examples unearthed in the remains of Nineveh, ancient Assyria’s capital. The Egyptian wooden pin lock, which comprised a bolt, door fixture or attachment, and key, was created from similar locks. Pins inside the fixture were pulled out of drilled holes into the bolt when the key was inserted, allowing it to move. The pins dropped part-way into the bolt when the key was withdrawn, blocking movement.

Since antiquity, the warded lock has been around and is still the most well-known lock and key design in the Western world. Between 870 and 900, English artisans invented the first all-metal locks, which are credited to them. The key is also claimed to have been created in the 6th century BC by Theodorus of Samos.

‘The Romans created metal locks and keys, as well as the warding system of security.’

The keys to affluent Romans’ possessions were typically worn as rings on their fingers, and they stored them in safe lockable chests within their homes. There were two advantages to the practice: Keeping the key close to hand at all times and suggesting that the wearer was affluent and vital enough to have valuables worth safeguarding.

A unique form of lock may be discovered at the Beguinage of the Belgian city of Lier, dating from the 17th-18th century. However, it may be earlier because similar locks date from the 14th century. These are most likely Gothic locks, typically adorned with greenery in a V-shape around the keyhole.

The term “drunk man’s lock” is commonly used. However, the connection to being drunk may be inaccurate because these locks were allegedly constructed so that a person could still locate the keyhole in the dark. However, this may not be the case because the decorations were simply ornamental. Similar locks have been created in recent years.
