Sir Giles Gilbert Scott created the red telephone box, a telephone kiosk for a public phone that is a common sight in the streets of the UK, Malta, Bermuda, and Gibraltar.

The iconic British red telephone kiosks are still common in the UK and in current or former British colonies around the world, despite a recent decline in their population. They were painted red to make them stand out.

The fascias of the kiosks began to bear a conspicuous crown, which stood in for the British government, in 1926. The red phone box is frequently seen as a global symbol of British culture. The Mini, the Supermarine Spitfire, the London subway map, the World Wide Web, Concorde, and the AEC Routemaster bus were among the top 10 design symbols in Britain in 2006, along with the K2 phone box. The K2 was chosen by the Royal Mail in 2009 for their commemorative postage stamp series, “British Design Classics.” Many of the classic boxes still exist in Britain even though manufacture of them was discontinued with the introduction of the KX series in 1985.

On the University of Oklahoma campus in Norman, Oklahoma, a number of these unusual phone boxes have been placed, where they continue to fulfill their intended purpose. Some have also been put in place in Glencoe and downtown Glenview, Illinois, among other places in the United States.

Additionally, there is one in front of the British Embassy in Washington, DC. In Oxford, Mississippi, there is a red phone box in the Courthouse Square as well. One is on the square in Collierville, Tennessee, while the other is close to Pepper Palace in the Village Shops retail center in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. There are two in use in Tennessee.

In the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s student center, a red phone box is in use. The quaint mountain village of Rowe, Massachusetts also has a red telephone box outside the town building (town hall/police station/post office), which is an original fixture from the time the community first received telephone service. In the Canada section and the United Kingdom area of Disney’s Epcot in Orlando, Florida, respectively, there are two red phone boxes on exhibit.

One is on exhibit in Winter Park, close to downtown Orlando, at English Gardens – A Place for Weddings. Outside the Allied Building on Treasure Island, Florida, you may also see an original K6. The Ellenton Outlet Mall, located close to Bradenton, Florida, off I-75, also has a few red boxes.

These have functional US payphone equipment and their original STD code cards are still in situ. In Westminster, Maryland, there is a red phone box outside Johanson’s Dining House at the intersection of West Main Street and Route 27.
