Los Angeles is the biggest city in California, formally known as the City of Los Angeles and shortened as L.A. It is the second-largest metropolis in the United States, after New York City, and the third-largest city in North America, after Mexico City and New York City, with a population of almost 4 million. Los Angeles is recognized for its Mediterranean climate, ethnic and cultural variety, the entertainment sector in Hollywood, and its large metropolitan region.

Los Angeles is located in a basin in Southern California next to the Pacific Ocean, with mountains reaching 10,000 feet (3,000 meters) and deserts. Los Angeles County, the most populous county in the United States, is headquartered in the metropolis, which spans 469 square miles (1,210 km2). The Los Angeles metropolitan area (MSA) has a population of 13.1 million people, making it the country’s second-largest metropolitan region after New York’s. Metro Los Angeles, as well as the Inland Empire and Ventura County, make up Greater Los Angeles. With an estimated population of 18.7 million people in 2015, it is the second most populous combined statistical area in the United States, behind New York.

The territory that became Los Angeles was home to the Chumash and Tongva tribes before being conquered by Spain in 1542 by Juan Rodrguez Cabrillo. The city was built on the town of Yaanga on September 4, 1781, by Spanish ruler Felipe de Neve. Following the Mexican War of Independence in 1821, it became a part of Mexico. Los Angeles and the rest of California were bought as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, at the end of the MexicanΓÇôAmerican War, and so became part of the United States.

On April 4, 1850, Los Angeles was founded as a municipality, five months before California became a state. The discovery of oil in the 1890s accelerated the city’s expansion. The Los Angeles Aqueduct, which transports water from Eastern California, was completed in 1913, allowing the city to grow even further.

Los Angeles has a varied and thriving economy, with companies operating in a wide range of professional and cultural sectors. It also boasts the world’s busiest cargo port. Los Angeles was named the world’s most powerful metropolis and fourth-richest city in 2018, surpassing New York City. After New York City, the Los Angeles metropolitan region had a gross metropolitan product of over $1.0 trillion in 2018, making it the world’s second-largest economy. Los Angeles held the Summer Olympics in 1932 and 1984, and will again in 2028.
