Louis William Tomlinson (born Louis Troy Austin; 24 December 1991) is a singer and songwriter from England. As a member of the boy band One Direction, he came to popularity. He began his career in television dramas before auditioning for The X Factor, a British music competition show, in 2010. He was placed into a group with four other competitors after being ousted as a solo performer, establishing One Direction, which went on to become one of the best-selling boy bands of all time.

Following the group’s break in 2016, Tomlinson released his first solo song, “Just Hold On,” in December 2016. It was certified platinum in the United Kingdom after reaching number two on the UK Singles Chart. Tomlinson released “Back to You” with American singer Bebe Rexha, which was certified platinum in the United States and the United Kingdom, as well as “Miss You” in 2017. In the same year, he was included to Debrett’s 2017 list of the UK’s most powerful individuals.

In 2018, Tomlinson served as a judge and coach for the “Boys” category on the fifteenth season of The X Factor. Due to his mentee Dalton Harris winning the competition, he became the first former participant to become the winning mentor. Tomlinson released the songs “Two of Us,” “Kill My Mind,” “We Made It,” “Don’t Let It Break Your Heart,” and “Walls” the following year, leading up to the release of his first album Walls in January 2020.

Louis William Tomlinson was born in the English town of Doncaster, in the county of South Yorkshire. His parents, Johannah “Jay” Poulston and Troy Austin, divorced when he was a baby. He has a strained relationship with his father. Later, he adopted his stepfather’s surname, Mark Tomlinson. From Poulston’s marriage to Mark, he has four younger half-sisters: Charlotte, Félicité (2000–2019), and twins Phoebe and Daisy. Subsequently, through Poulston’s connection with Dan Deakin, who she later married, he has two additional half siblings, twins Doris and Ernest (born 2014). Georgia, his paternal half-sister, is his only sibling.

Tomlinson attended Doncaster’s Hayfield School and, later, Hall Cross School (now Hall Cross Academy). After failing his first year of A levels at Hayfield School, he transferred to Hall Cross School and re-started his A levels. He worked at a Vue theater and as a server in the hospitality suites at Doncaster Rovers football stadium. Fat Friends featured Tomlinson and two of his siblings in supporting roles. He went to an acting school in Barnsley after Fat Friends.

He appeared in the drama film If I Had You on ITV and the BBC’s Waterloo Road. Tomlinson participated in a number of musical plays at Hall Cross, which gave him a developing feeling of ambition and determination. He was inspired to audition for The X Factor after playing Danny Zuko in the Hall Cross musical production of Grease.

In a 2017 interview, Tomlinson revealed that another reason he auditioned for The X Factor was because the band he was in before One Direction, which he joined when he was 14, threw him out after a new boy arrived at the school and chose to take his position as their vocalist. Tomlinson auditioned for The X Factor in 2009 but did not make it past the producer’s round; nevertheless, this little setback only strengthened his resolve to return the following year.
