Luke Skywalker is a fictional character and the primary protagonist of George Lucas’ Star Wars franchise’s original film trilogy. Luke was initially seen in Star Wars (1977), and then again in The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Return of the Jedi (1983). He was played by Mark Hamill (1983). Hamill reprised his role as Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars sequel trilogy three decades later, starring in all three films: The Force Awakens (2015), The Last Jedi (2017), and The Rise of Skywalker (2018). (2019). He voiced the character who was played by a body double with digital de-aging in The Mandalorian episode “Chapter 16: The Rescue” (2020).

Luke, who grew up on Tatooine as a farmer with his uncle and aunt, becomes a key player in the Rebel Alliance’s fight against the Galactic Empire. Luke Skywalker is the twin brother of Rebellion commander Princess Leia and the future brother-in-law of smuggler Han Solo. He is the son of fallen Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker (turned Sith Lord Darth Vader) and Padmé Amidala. Luke becomes a Jedi under the tutelage of Jedi Masters Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda, and helps to restore the Jedi Order.

Later, he tutors Rey and teaches his nephew, Ben Solo. Despite the fact that Luke dies at the conclusion of The Last Jedi, he reappears in The Rise of Skywalker as a Force spirit, pushing Rey to confront her grandpa, the revived Emperor Palpatine. The ghosts of Luke and Leia offer Rey their approval to take the Skywalker surname and carry on their family’s tradition at the end of the film.

In the prequel film Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, the character makes a short appearance as a newborn. Luke is a prominent character in numerous stories set after Return of the Jedi in the de-canonized Star Wars Expanded Universe (renamed Legends), in which he is shown as a great Jedi Master, the spouse of Mara Jade, the father of Ben Skywalker, and the maternal uncle to Jaina, Jacen, and Anakin Solo.

Luke lives with his Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru on a moisture farm on the desert planet of Tatooine in the original 1977 film (later renamed A New Hope). When Luke buys the droids C-3PO and R2-D2, he takes the first steps toward his destiny. He notices a message from Princess Leia Organa of Alderaan while studying R2-D2. When R2-D2 goes missing, Luke sets out to find the droid and is saved by Obi-Wan Kenobi, an elderly hermit, from a band of Tusken Raiders.

R2-D2 plays the complete message from Leia to Obi-Wan, begging him to help her fight the Galactic Empire. Luke and Obi-Wan withdraw to the latter’s house, where R2-D2 plays the full message from Leia to Obi-Wan. Obi-Wan claims that he and Luke’s father were both Jedi Knights, and that his father was assassinated by Darth Vader, a treacherous Jedi. Obi-Wan offers to take Luke to Alderaan and instruct him in the ways of the Force, but Luke rejects because he feels compelled to continue farming for his uncle.
