Since 2006, Apple Inc. has sold the MacBook, a line of Macintosh notebook computers that run on Apple’s macOS operating system. During the Mac’s 2005 move to Intel CPUs, it supplanted the PowerBook and iBook brands. The MacBook Air (2008″present) and MacBook Pro (2006″present) are the current models. From 2006 to 2012, and again from 2015 to 2019, two distinct “MacBook” lines existed.

Apple unveiled MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models with the new Apple M1 system on a chip on November 10, 2020. Apple will continue to offer MacBook Pro models equipped with Intel CPUs.

The MacBook Air is Apple’s most affordable laptop computer. While the first version was positioned as a luxury ultraportable above the 2006-2012 MacBook, later models’ costs were reduced, and the MacBook was discontinued, making it the entry-level Macintosh portable. The basic model, which was available from 2010 to 2017, had a 13-inch screen and was Apple’s thinnest notebook computer until the MacBook was released in March 2015. Two USB Type-A 3.0 ports, a Thunderbolt 2 connector, and an SDXC card slot are included in this MacBook Air variant (only on the 13inch model). This MacBook Air model didn’t feature a Retina Display. From October 2010 through October 2016, an 11-inch MacBook Air model was offered. The MacBook Air received a minor update in 2017, with the CPU speed up to 1.8 GHz.

The MacBook Air had a substantial redesign on October 30, 2018, replacing the USB Type-A ports, MagSafe, and SD card slot with two USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports and a headphone jack. It had a Retina display and Intel Y-series Amber Lake i5 CPUs, as well as a Force Touch trackpad, a third-generation butterfly mechanism keyboard, and the Touch ID sensor from the fourth-generation MacBook Pro, but no Touch Bar. The basic price was also increased, while the 2017 model’s base configuration was kept until July 9, 2019, when it was phased out along with the Retina MacBook. On the same day, the base price of this model was reduced to $1099 ($999 for students).

Apple announced on November 10, 2020, that the MacBook Air will employ the new Apple M1 system on a chip. The new Air doesn’t have a fan, which ensures quiet operation but limits the M1 chip’s speed in long-term operations. It was stated that performance was superior to that of most modern Intel laptops.

The MacBook Pro is Apple’s higher-end laptop, which comes in 13-inch and 16-inch sizes. The 13-inch MacBook Pro of the latest version was released in October of 2018. It has a touch-sensitive OLED display strip in place of the function keys, a Touch ID sensor integrated into the power button, and four Thunderbolt 3 ports. The 13-inch model was also available in a less expensive configuration with traditional function keys and only two USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 ports, but since July 2019, the base MacBook Pro model has included the Touch Bar as well as quad-core processors, similar to the higher-end models, though it still only has two USB-C / Thunderbolt 3 ports. Many of the enhancements seen in the 16″ 2019 MacBook Pro are included in the May 4, 2020 update, including the scissor mechanism keyboard (“Magic Keyboard”) and a physical Escape button.
