Magento is a PHP-based open-source e-commerce platform. It also makes use of other PHP frameworks like Laminas and Symfony. The Open Software License (OSL) v3.0 governs the distribution of Magento source code. Adobe Inc bought Magento for $1.68 billion in May 2018.

Varien Inc., a private firm based in Culver City, California, first created the program with the help of volunteers.

On March 31, 2008, Varien released the first general-availability version of the program. Roy Rubin, Varien’s previous CEO, then sold a stake in the firm to eBay, which eventually bought it out and then sold it to Permira, who finally sold it to Adobe.

Magento makes use of the MySQL or MariaDB relational database management systems, as well as the PHP programming language and Zend Framework components. It follows object-oriented programming and model”view”controller architectural standards.

The platform has won the “Best of Open Source Software Awards” and “SourceForge Community Choice Awards” multiple times in its early years of operation.

eBay stated in February 2011 that it had invested in Magento in 2010, taking a 49 percent ownership stake in the firm. On June 6, 2011, eBay announced that it will purchase the remainder of Magento and incorporate it into its new X.Commerce effort. “Magento will continue to operate out of Los Angeles, with Yoav Kutner and me as its executives,” stated Magento CEO and co-founder Roy Rubin on the Magento blog.

Yoav Kutner quit Magento in April 2012, claiming that owing to high-level personnel changes, the company’s vision has altered since its acquisition.

Magento was spun out as an independent business by the new owner Permira private equity firm on November 3, 2015, as a result of the breakdown of eBay following Carl Icahn’s raid.

Magento was bought by Adobe for $1.68 billion in May 2018, with the intention of merging it into Adobe Experience Cloud, the company’s Enterprise CMS platform. The purchase was completed on June 19, 2018.
