A maggot is a larva of a fly. It is applies in particular to Brachycera larvae such as house flies, cheese flies, and blowflies, rather than Nematocera, such as mosquitoes and crane flies. According to a 2012 study, the larvae population in North America is just over 3×105 trillion.

Maggot is not a technical term and should not be taken as such; in many standard textbooks on entomology, it is not included in the index at all. In many non-technical texts, this term is commonly used for insect larvae. Other sources came up with their own definitions; for example: “The term refers to eating when all traces of limbs have disappeared” and “Refers to nameless dipterous larvae.”

Maggot of flies are of great importance in ecology and medicine; among other roles, various species occupy an important place in the processing of carrion and garbage, affect crops and food, spread microbial infections and cause myiasis.
