Manchester United Football Club is an English professional football club headquartered in Old Trafford, Greater Manchester. It participates in the Premier League, the country’s highest level. The Manchester United Football Club, also known as “the Red Devils,” was formed in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR Football Club, changed its name to Manchester United in 1902, and moved to its current stadium, Old Trafford, in 1910.

Manchester United has a record 20 League championships, 12 FA Cups, five League Cups, and a record 21 FA Community Shields, more than any other team in English football. Three European Cups/UEFA Champions Leagues, one UEFA Europa League, one UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, one UEFA Super Cup, one Intercontinental Cup, and one FIFA Club World Cup have also been won by United.

The club became the first in English football history to win the continental European triple in 1998″99. They were one of just five clubs to win all three major UEFA club tournaments by winning the UEFA Europa League in 2016″17.

Eight players were killed in the Munich aviation accident in 1958. Manchester United became the first English football team to win the European Cup in 1968, under the leadership of Matt Busby. Between 1986 and 2013, when he announced his retirement, Alex Ferguson won 38 trophies as a manager, including 13 Premier League crowns, 5 FA Cups, and two UEFA Champions Leagues.

Manchester United has rivalries with Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, and Leeds United, and is one of the most popular football clubs in the world.

Manchester United was the world’s highest-earning football club in 2016″17, with ,676.3 million in yearly income, and the world’s third-most valuable football club in 2019, valued at £3.15 billion ($3.81 billion).

After being listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1991, the club was taken private in 2005 after Malcolm Glazer purchased it for around £800 million, with over £500 million in borrowed funds becoming the club’s debt. Although the Glazer family retains overall ownership and management of the club, certain shares of the club have been listed on the New York Stock Exchange since 2012.

The Carriage and Wagon department of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway (LYR) depot at Newton Heath founded Manchester United in 1878 as Newton Heath LYR Football Club. The team began by playing games against other departments and railway firms, but on November 20, 1880, they played their first documented match, losing 6″0 against Bolton Wanderers’ reserve squad while wearing the railway company’s green and gold colors. By 1888, the club had joined The Combination, a regional football league, as a founding member.

Newton Heath joined the newly established Football Alliance when the league was disbanded after only one season. The Football Alliance lasted three seasons before being amalgamated into The Football League. As a consequence, the club was promoted to the First Division for the 1892″93 season, having gained independence from the railway corporation and lost the “LYR” from its name. The club was demoted to the Second Division after two seasons.
