The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is an American media franchise and shared universe focused on a series of superhero films independently created by Marvel Studios based on characters that appeared in American comics published by Marvel Comics. The franchise also includes comics, short films, television series, and digital series. The shared universe, like the original Marvel universe in comics, is created by crossing over common plot elements, settings, characters, and cast.

The franchise has been successful on the commercial network and generally received a positive critical response, although some reviewers found that some of its films and TV shows suffered in the service of the wider universe. It has inspired other film and television studios with comic book characters to create similar shared universes. The MCU has also been the focus of other media outside the general universe, including the various Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, an attraction at the Discovery Times Square, an exhibition at the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, two television specials, guides for each film, several video game and commercials.

By 2005, Marvel Entertainment began producing their own films and distributing them through Paramount Pictures. Previously, Marvel, along with Columbia Pictures, New Line Cinema and others, produced several superhero films, including a seven-year contract with 20th Century Fox. Marvel makes a relatively small profit from licensing deals with other studios and wants to get more money out of its films, while maintaining artistic control over projects and distribution. Avi Arad, head of the Marvel film division, was pleased with Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films at Sony, but less pleased with the others. As a result, they decided to create Marvel Studios, the first major independent Hollywood movie studio since DreamWorks.

In December 2017, The Walt Disney Company agreed to acquire assets from 21th Century Fox, including 20th Century Fox, for $52.4 billion. In June of the following year, after Comcast worth of $65 billion, Disney increased its bid to $71.3 billion. The operation officially ended on March 19, 2019.
