Mason Will John Greenwood (born 1 October 2001) is an English professional footballer who plays as a forward for Manchester United in the Premier League.

A graduate of United’s youth system, scored in a UEFA Europa League match against Astana in September 2019, becoming the club’s youngest ever European goalscorer at the age of 17 years, 353 days. His senior international debut for England will be against Iceland in a UEFA Nations League match in September 2020.

Greenwood was arrested in January 2022 on suspicion of raping and assaulting a woman, and a few days later on suspicion of sexual assault and threatening to kill. Greenwood has not trained or played for either his club or his national team since then. In October 2022, he was charged with attempted rape, assault causing actual bodily harm, and controlling and coercive behavior. In February 2023, the allegations against him were dropped.

Greenwood began playing for Manchester United at the age of six, at the club’s development school in Halifax. He joined the Under-18 squad for the 2017-18 season, despite being eligible for the Under-16s, after graduating through the academy ranks, and finishing as the top scorer in the U18 Premier League North with 17 goals in 21 games. Greenwood was named Player of the Tournament in May 2018 when the youth team won the ICGT Trophy, an international youth football competition, in the Netherlands.

Greenwood scored his first goal of the season in Manchester United’s opening match of the 2021-22 Premier League season against Leeds on 14 August 2021. Fifteen days later, he scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers, becoming only the second teenager in Premier League history, after Robbie Fowler, to score in each of his team’s first three games of the season, and assisting United in breaking the record for the most consecutive away matches undefeated in English football history with 28.

Greenwood had 32 career goals for United by the time he turned 20 in October, trailing only Norman Whiteside (39) and George Best (37) as teenagers. In 2021, he was one of ten players nominated for the Kopa Trophy. He finished fifth, behind Pedri, Jude Bellingham, Jamal Musiala, and Nuno Mendes, according to results released in November. Greenwood scored his first goal in the 2021-22 Champions League on December 8th, in a 1-1 draw against Young Boys in interim manager Ralf Rangnick’s first Champions League game with the club.

play style

Greenwood began his career as a midfielder but gradually evolved into a centre forward.   With Manchester United, he frequently plays on the right flank before moving more centrally to occupy as a second striker when the ball is played into the penalty area. Several of his early goals saw him dropping a shoulder or chopping the ball to get it on to his left foot before scoring. He also frequently redirects his shot, aiming low from the right side of the box for the near post.

Clayton Blackmore, a former Manchester United player, stated in May 2018: “He’s very good on the ball and with both feet. He’s the first guy I’ve seen take penalties and free kicks with his incorrect foot. I’ve never met somebody like that before!” Former academy coach Mark Senior stated in March 2019: “Many claim he’s the new Robin van Persie, but I’m not sure. I believe he is his own man. I’ve never seen a player like him. His manner implies that his pace is deceptive because he is so fast.”

On Manchester United’s pre-season tour in July 2019, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer praised Greenwood, saying: “He can play all three front-three positions or all four front-four positions, as he can play numbers 10, 7, 11, and 9. He’s a natural footballer who comes in with his left foot, but he’s got two feet and can play wherever up front. He’s an absolute natural. When he takes a penalty with his right, then another with his left, free kicks with his left, then free kicks with his right. He’s almost 50:50 left-footed, maybe 51:49 left-footed.”
