McDonald’s Corporation is an American fast food company founded in 1940 as a restaurant operated by Richard and Maurice MacDonald in San Bernardino, California, USA. They renamed their business as a hamburger stand, and then turned the company into a franchise with the Golden Arches logo, which was introduced in 1953 in Phoenix, Arizona.

In 1955, Ray Kroc, a businessman, joined the company as a franchise agent and began buying a network from the McDonald’s brothers. McDonald’s had its original headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois, but relocated its global headquarters to Chicago in early 2018.

McDonald’s is the world’s largest restaurant chain by revenue, serving more than 69 million customers daily in more than 100 countries at 37,855 outlets since 2018. Although McDonald’s is best known for its burgers, cheeseburgers and french fries, they also offer chicken products, breakfast products, soft drinks, milkshakes, wraps and desserts. In response to changing consumer tastes and the negative impact of their junk food, the company added salads, fish, smoothies and fruits to its menu.

McDonald’s revenue comes from the rent, royalties, and payments paid by the franchisees, as well as sales from restaurants that the company manages. According to two reports published in 2018, McDonald’s is the second largest private employer in the world with 1.7 million employees (behind Walmart with 2.3 million employees).

Currently, the company owns a total of 21,685 company-owned locations and 35,085 franchised locations, including 21,685 locations franchised to conventional franchisees, 7,255 places for development licenses and 1,675 places for foreign affiliates.
