Since the foundation of medal and awards, the Society has received an annual grant of 50 guineas from the reigning monarch will be honoured with royal approval “for the promotion and advancement of geographical science and discovery.”

Initially award is given in the form of money, and then from 1836-38, such as the Royal Medal.

In 1839 it was decided to split the prize from that year onwards, the Society awarded two medals Both have equal value and dignity.

Medals were made of pure gold, except during the years 1918-21, when they were made of bronze.

There are three types of medals such as gold, silver and bronze medal which can be awarded to the winner in sports, Olympics, schools, colleges, etc.
