To begin with the rule of thumb is to always choose a shoe that matches the color of your pants or is in a darker shade. Many people have the idea that socks should match the color of their shoes – you don’t have to be. Socks are like ties, they could match or contrast but should go well with everything else. Speaking of color matching, you may want to match the color of your shoes with that of your belt.

If you are wearing a pair of jeans, you can practically any shoes, as long as it is not very shiny and looks casual. Boots and sneakers go well with jeans, and you can even think of wearing lug soles, sandals or loafers with your jeans. It depends on the type of shirt you wear with your jeans. T-shirts go well with sneakers; polo shirts go well with loafers, and the boots go perfectly with khaki shirts or other casual shirts. Again, when wearing dress pants, opt for the shinier dress shoes. The more your pants are dressed, the more your shoe should be shiny or elegant. And, of course, it’s a good idea to match their colors or opt for a darker shade of shoes.
