Monstercat is a Vancouver, British Columbia-based independent electronic music record label. Mike Darlington and Ari Paunonen founded the label in 2011, and it published music on a tri-weekly basis until 2018, when it switched to four releases per week. In 2021, this would be increased to six releases each week.

The label began releasing regular compilation albums including music from diverse artists with the release of Monstercat 001 ” Launch Week, its debut compilation album. Until Monstercat 030 ” Finale was released in 2017, each compilation was given a name and the narrative of the mascot was presented on the album cover. This was followed by a rebranding of the label, which included a new Monstercat Uncaged series of CDs. Monstercat debuted brand called “Instinct” in 2018. Monstercat purchased electronic label Silk Music in 2021, resulting in the formation of a third brand known as “Monstercat Silk.”

Pegboard Nerds, Vicetone, and Seven Lions are just a few of the noteworthy artists who have appeared on Monstercat. Monstercat has also published music CDs for FortniteRocket League, and Beat Saber, among other video games.

The label is most known for the 2016 release of American DJ Marshmello’s song “Alone,” which was certified Platinum in the United States and Canada in 2017 and 2018. For months after its release on April Fool’s Day, Irish music producer Noisestorm’s “Crab Rave” became an online meme.

Mike Darlington (born 1989) and Ari Paunonen (born 1989/90), two university students from Waterloo, Ontario, created Monstercat Media on July 1, 2011. The label’s YouTube account, which acted as a platform for promoting their friends and their music, was launched on the same day and began uploading tri-weekly in October. Later, the young students were in charge of creating the label’s uniform collection CDs.

After Darlington and Paunonen finished school, the team relocated to their new headquarters in Vancouver in 2012.

Monstercat released a manifesto in August 2014 pushing for copyright reform. They expressed their intention to provide musicians more leeway when sampling other musicians’ recordings in the document.

Monstercat FM was established in December 2014 as part of live-streaming service Twitch’s foray into music broadcasting. Monstercat FM is a Twitch feed that runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and features many of Monstercat’s releases throughout their entire existence as a label. A DJ performance by Monstercat artist Stephen Walking served as the stream’s debut event. Monstercat FM was later introduced to YouTube and Mixer, which is owned by Microsoft.

Monstercat has performed at a number of music events since 2015. The Amsterdam Dance Event was one such event. Their 2015 event was characterized by Billboard as “a three-hour mixing excursion.”

Monstercat signed American producer Marshmello’s track “Alone” in May 2016. As of December 2019, this music video had received over 1.1 billion views across YouTube, including a label record 161 million views on Monstercat’s YouTube account. The artist earned $21 million the year after the video was released because to these views.
