Mortal Kombat is an American media property based on a series of video games that were first released in 1992 by Midway Games. The first game was based on an idea by Ed Boon and John Tobias to make a video game starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, but when that plan fell through, they decided to make a fantasy-themed fighting game instead, paying homage to him with the movie character Johnny Cage, whose initials and personal style are similar to Van Damme’s. Mortal Kombat was the first fighting game to offer a hidden fighter who could only be accessed if the user met certain criteria.

The original game inspired a slew of sequels and spin-offs, including many action-adventure games, a comic book series, and a card game. Lawrence Kasanoff, a movie producer, acquired the game’s rights in the early 1990s and created the franchise’s first film. Kasanoff also created the second film, an animated television series, live-action television series films, the first platinum-selling record, and a live-action tour. Mortal Kombat is the best-selling fighting game franchise in the world, as well as one of the most successful media properties of all time.

The series has a reputation for severe brutality, particularly in its Fatalities episode (finishing moves allowing the player to finish off their defeated opponent). The Entertainment Software Rating Board video game rating system was created in part as a result of the Mortal Kombat controversy. Early games in the series were also known for their lifelike digitized sprites and extensive palette shifting to create new characters. Following Midway’s collapse, Warner Bros. Entertainment bought the Mortal Kombat development team and renamed it NetherRealm Studios.

The series has featured a large number of player characters, some of whom have become mainstays, such as Baraka, Cassie Cage, Cyrax, Ermac, Fujin, Goro, Jade, Jax, Johnny Cage, Kabal, Kano, Kenshi, Kintaro, Kitana, Kung Lao, Liu Kang, Mileena, Motaro, Nightwolf, Noob Saibot, Quan Chi, Raiden, Rain, Reptile, Scorpion, Earth’s people and cyborgs, good and bad deities, and residents of Outworld and other worlds are among them.

Furthermore, beginning with Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, which featured several DC Universe heroes and villains, all subsequent games have featured guest characters such as Freddy Krueger from the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, Kratos from the God of War franchise (exclusively for Play Station 3), Jason Voorhees from the Friday the 13th franchise, the Alien from the Alien franchise, Leatherface from Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and the Alien from the Alien franchise.
