My Chemical Romance is a Newark, New Jersey-based rock band. Lead vocalist Gerard Way, lead guitarist Ray Toro, rhythm guitarist Frank Iero, and bassist Mikey Way make up the band’s current roster. The band was founded by Gerard, Mikey, Toro, and Matt Pelissier (and subsequently joined by Iero), and their debut album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, was released in 2002 on Eyeball Records. The next year, they signed with Reprise Records and published Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, their major-label debut, in 2004. Bob Bryar replaced Pelissier shortly after the album’s release. The album was a commercial success, and over a year later, it was certified platinum.

The Black Parade, the band’s 2006 concept album, garnered generally positive reviews from music reviewers and was certified triple platinum in the United States and the United Kingdom, surpassing the popularity of the band’s previous albums. Bob Bryar, the band’s long-time drummer, quit in March 2010, and Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys, their fourth studio album, was released in November of the same year to favorable reviews.

On tour, the band replaced Bryar with Michael Pedicone and Jarrod Alexander as drummers, and in 2012, touring keyboardist James Dewees was recruited. Over five months in 2012 and early 2013, the band released a set of singles recorded in 2009 under the collective title Conventional Weapons.

The band then announced their split on March 22, 2013, one month after the series’ last track release. May Death Never Stop You, a greatest hits CD, was published in March 2014. The Black Parade/Living with Ghosts, a tenth-anniversary edition of the album that includes demos and live versions of the album’s B-sides as well as an early version of “Welcome to the Black Parade,” titled “The Five of Us Are Dying,” was released on September 23, 2016.

In 2017, the band reformed behind closed doors. They announced a reunion performance on October 31, 2019, on December 20, 2019 in Los Angeles. The tour was expanded to include dates in AustraliaNew Zealand, and Japan a week later. They announced North American and European performances in January 2020, they were eventually postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Frontman Gerard Way and drummer Matt Pelissier founded the band in Newark, New Jersey, shortly after the September 11 attacks. Witnessing the collapse of the World Trade Center towers had such an impact on Way’s life that he decided to form a band. Way has stated that “music was this thing I secretly wanted to do” and subsequently composed the song “Skylines and Turnstiles” to convey his thoughts about September 11; shortly after, Ray Toro was hired as the band’s guitarist because Way couldn’t sing and play the guitar at the same time at the time.

Mikey Way, Gerard’s younger brother, came up with the band’s name while working at a Barnes & Noble and was inspired by the title of a book by Irvine Welsh called Ecstasy: Three Tales of Chemical Romance.

During the first recording sessions, the songs “Our Lady of Sorrows” and “Cubicles” were recorded in Pelissier’s attic. Those sessions are known as “The Attic Demos” by the band. Mikey Way chose to join the band after hearing the demo and dropping out of college. The band met Frank Iero, the main vocalist and guitarist for Pencey Prep, while working with Eyeball Records.

Following the disbandment of Pencey Prep in 2002, Iero joined My Chemical Romance only days before the band’s debut album was to be recorded. They recorded their debut album, I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love, barely three months after forming the band, and Eyeball Records published it in 2002. Thursday frontman Geoff Rickley produced the record after the band became acquainted with him while playing gigs in New Jersey.

On two tunes, Iero performed guitar, one of which was “Early Sunsets Over Monroeville.” The band was scheduled at the iconic venue Big Daddy’s, and it began to gain more notice.
