Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto is a Japanese manga series written and drawn by him. It chronicles the narrative of Naruto Uzumaki, a teenage ninja who aspires to be the Hokage, the village’s leader, and wants acclaim from his peers. The tale is divided into two sections, the first of which takes place during Naruto’s pre-adolescent years and the second during his adolescent years. The series is based on two one-shot comics by Kishimoto: Karakuri (1995), which received an honorable mention in Shueisha’s monthly Hop Step Award the following year, and Naruto (1996). (1997).

From 1999 to 2014, Naruto was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shnen Jump magazine and published in tankbon (book) form in 72 volumes. The manga was converted into an anime television series by Pierrot and Aniplex, which aired 220 episodes in Japan between 2002 and 2007, with an English adaptation airing on Cartoon Network and YTV from 2005 to 2009. Naruto: Shippuden, a successor to the original series, started in Japan in 2007 and ran for 500 episodes before being cancelled in 2017. From 2009 to 2011, the English version was shown on Disney XD, broadcasting the first 98 episodes, before being moved to Adult Swim’s Toonami programming block in January 2014, when it was restarted from the beginning. Adult Swim still airs the English dub on a weekly basis. The anime series debuted on Viz Media’s streaming service Neon Alley in December 2012 with 99 episodes and finished in March 2016 with 338 episodes. Pierrot has created eleven films and twelve unique video animations in addition to the anime series (OVAs). Light novels, video games, and trading cards created by other firms are also available as Naruto products.

Naruto was serialized in Viz Media’s digital Weekly Shonen Jump magazine after the manga and anime were licensed for North American production. The anime series premiered in 2005 in the United States and Canada, then in 2006 and 2007 in the United Kingdom and Australia, respectively. Viz also published the films and most OVAs from the series, with the first feature debuting in cinemas. Boruto: Naruto Next Generations: Naruto continues the Naruto tale with Naruto’s son, Boruto Uzumaki. Boruto desires to forge his own ninja path rather than following in his father’s footsteps.

Naruto is the fourth most popular manga series in history, having sold 250 million copies in 46 countries, with 153 million copies sold in Japan alone and 97 million copies sold abroad. It has become one of Viz Media’s best-selling manga series; English translations of the volumes have often been on the bestseller lists of USA Today and The New York Times, and the seventh book earned a Quill Award in 2006. Character development, excellent narratives, and well-executed action sequences were commended by reviewers, while some felt the battle scenes bogged down the tale. The manga, which has a coming-of-age narrative, uses cultural elements from Japanese mythology and Confucianism, according to critics.

The Nine-Tails, a strong fox, assaults Konoha, a secret leaf hamlet in the Land of Fire, one of the Ninja World’s Five Great Shinobi Countries. In response, Konoha’s leader and Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze (along with his wife Kushina Uzumaki), seals the fox inside the body of his newborn son, Naruto Uzumaki, turning him into a beast’s host; this costs Naruto’s father his life, and the Third Hokage returns from retirement to lead Konoha once more. Naruto is frequently mocked by the inhabitants of Konoha for hosting the Nine-Tails. Naruto does not hear of the Nine-Tails until 12 years later, when Mizuki, a renegade ninja, discloses the truth to Naruto, thanks to an order by the Third Hokage prohibiting any discussion of these occurrences. Naruto then overcomes Mizuki in battle, winning the respect of Iruka Umino, his instructor.

Naruto becomes a ninja shortly after and forms Team 7 with Sasuke Uchiha, with whom he frequently competes, and Sakura Haruno, with whom he has a crush, under the guidance of an experienced sensei, the elite ninja Kakashi Hatake. Team 7, like all the other ninja teams in the hamlet, completes missions that the villagers request, ranging from completing chores and serving as bodyguards to assassinations.

Kakashi permits Team 7 to take a ninja test after multiple missions, including a big one in the Land of Waves, allowing them to graduate to a higher rank and embark on more challenging missions, known as Chunin Exams. Orochimaru, a wanted criminal, invades Konoha during the examinations and kills the Third Hokage in retaliation. One of the three legendary ninjas, Jiraiya, refuses the rank of Fifth Hokage in favor of Tsunade, whom he picks to succeed him as Fifth Hokage.
