A network video recorder (NVR) is a customized computer system with software that records digital video to a disk drive, USB flash drive, SD memory card, or other mass storage device. There is no specific video capturing hardware in an NVR. On the other hand, the software is usually executed on a specialized device with an embedded operating system.

Standard operating systems, processors, and video management software, on the other hand, are utilized to provide enhanced functionality and serviceability. In an IP video surveillance system, an NVR is commonly used.

Network video recorders differ from digital video recorders (DVRs) in that they receive their input via a network rather than from a video capture card or tuner. DVR video is encoded and processed on the DVR, whereas NVR video is encoded and processed at the camera and then transmitted to the NVR for storage or remote viewing. Additional processing, like compression or metadata labeling, may be done at the NVR.

There are hybrid NVR/DVR surveillance systems that combine both NVR and DVR; they are classified as NVRs.

NVR home surveillance systems are often wireless, quick to set up, and viewed via a web browser. They also allow the user to receive an email notification if an alarm is activated.
