Keiichi Arawi’s Nichijou is a Japanese comedy manga series that he wrote and drew. The manga was first serialized in Kadokawa Shoten’s manga magazine Shnen Ace in December 2006, and it was also serialized in Comptiq between March 2007 and July 2008. From July 2007 to December 2015, Kadokawa Shoten released all 10 chapters of the series in ten tankbon volumes.

Nichijou is situated in a suburban Japanese village and has an ensemble cast of individuals who share events from their daily lives that fluctuate between the banal and the odd, with little emphasis on a plot. After an earlier original video animation (OVA) was aired in March, a 26-episode anime adaptation directed by Tatsuya Ishihara and produced by Kyoto Animation was broadcast on TV Aichi in Japan between April and September 2011. On July 28, 2011, Vridge and Kadokawa Shoten released Nichijou: Uchuujin, a PlayStation Portable game.

Bandai Entertainment first licensed the manga and anime series in North America in July 2011, however both releases were canceled owing to the company’s downsizing. Vertical later licensed the manga series for English publication, with the first volume arriving in March 2016. On February 7, 2017, Funimation released the anime in North America with subtitles on Blu-ray Disc and DVD. For the Blu-ray re-release on July 23, 2019, an English dub was prepared. Madman Entertainment acquired the anime series in 2011 for distribution in Australia and New Zealand, and the DVDs were released in April and May of that year.

Western critics originally praised the anime adaptation with reservations, praising the animation quality but finding it lacking in continuous comedy and content. However, retrospective reviews have praised the series for its heart and strange humour, with one writer calling it one of the “finest animation comedies of all time.”

Nichijou centers on the hyperactive Yko Aioi, the bright and cheery Mio Naganohara, the calm and deadpan Mai Minakami, the worried android Nano Shinonome, her youthful inventor the Professor, and a talking cat called Sakamoto, as well as an ensemble cast of characters, in the village of Tokisadame. Random and/or bizarre incidents occur often throughout the series, primarily as a result of the ordinary situations that each character encounters.

Nano has the most major plot arc of all the characters in the anime series; the first half of Nichijou is about her ambition to become a high school student, while the second half is about her dread of being discovered as a robot at school. Throughout each episode, there are vignettes that are generally unconnected to the series’ primary topic, some of which are derived from Arawi’s previous manga, Helvetica Standard.

Yko is a 16-year-old high school girl with short brown hair who is full of energy. Yko’s major goal in life is to make every day more enjoyable and intriguing than usual, often at the expense of others or herself. She always copies from Mio or Mai instead of doing her own schoolwork since she is too lazy to do it herself. She is an usually laid-back person, but when she gets insulted, her mood shifts dramatically. In order to make basic pleasantries more entertaining, she frequently greets people with her catchphrase “selamat pagi” (Malay and Indonesian meaning “good morning”).
