In the Star Wars universe, Obi-Wan “Ben” Kenobi is a fictional character. Obi-Wan is a Jedi Master who appears as a minor character in the original trilogy and is played by English actor Alec Guinness. A younger version of the character, portrayed by Scottish actor Ewan McGregor, is one of the two major protagonists of the later-released prequel trilogy, with Anakin Skywalker. He is Luke Skywalker’s mentor in the original trilogy, teaching him the ways of the Jedi.

Obi-Wan Kenobi leads Luke through the Force in his struggle against the Galactic Empire after sacrificing himself in a combat with Darth Vader. He is originally a Padawan (apprentice) to Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn in the prequel trilogy, and subsequently mentor and friend of Luke’s father Anakin, who turns to the dark side of the Force and becomes Vader. In the sequel trilogy, the figure emerges as a disembodied voice communicating to protagonist Rey. He appears as a main character in a variety of different Star Wars works.

Guinness’ portrayal as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the 1977 Star Wars film garnered him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, the only acting nomination for a Star Wars film. McGregor’s portrayal of the character in the prequels earned accolades as well, and was seen as one of the trilogy’s highlights.

McGregor will reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in a Disney+ streaming series based on the character set 10 years after Revenge of the Sith and before A New Hope, with Hayden Christensen reprising his role as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader alongside McGregor. For his portrayal in A New Hope, Guinness received the Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor, while McGregor was nominated for the same award 20 years later for his performance in The Phantom Menace.

General Makabe Rokurta, a character played by Toshiro Mifune in Akira Kurosawa’s film The Hidden Fortress, is a vague inspiration for the role (whom franchise creator George Lucas also considered casting as Obi-Wan). Obi-first Wan’s meeting with Luke Skywalker is pulled directly from The Hobbit in an early draft of the first Star Wars film, citing Gandalf as a source of inspiration.

Obi-Wan was supposed to live through the first film, but Lucas discovered that the character had nothing to do with the final fight scenario. “It would be far more powerful, gratifying, and intriguing if Darth Vader were to murder him and he went on to a different form,” Lucas later pondered.

In the first Star Wars film, Obi-Wan Kenobi is presented as a 57-year-old recluse living on the planet Tatooine under the name Ben Kenobi. Obi-Wan saves Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) from a troop of Tusken Raiders as they explore the desert for R2-D2 (Kenny Baker). The now-found R2-D2 plays a tape of Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) telling Obi-Wan that R2-D2 has the schematics for the Galactic Empire’s superweapon, the Death Star, at Obi-house. Wan’s

To aid the Rebel Alliance, Leia begs him to securely transport R2-D2 and the blueprints to her home world of Alderaan. Obi-Wan discloses his true identity to Luke, explaining that he is a Jedi and a part of a long line of Force-sensitive fighters. He reveals that the Empire tracked down and murdered the Jedi with the aid of his former student, Darth Vader (David Prowse, played by James Earl Jones), Luke’s father’s apparent murderer.

He hands Luke his father’s lightsaber and invites him to join him in Alderaan for Jedi training. Luke initially rejects, but after learning that his aunt Beru (Shelagh Fraser) and uncle Owen (Phil Brown) were slain by Imperial stormtroopers, he joins Obi-Wan to Alderaan to train as a Jedi.
