Microsoft OneDrive (previously SkyDrive) is a file hosting and syncing service provided by Microsoft as part of their web-based Office application. OneDrive, which was first released in August 2007, allows users to store files and personal data in the cloud, such as Windows settings or BitLocker recovery keysshare files, and sync files across Android, Windows Phone, and iOS mobile devices, Windows and macOS computers, and Xbox 360 and Xbox One consoles. Microsoft Office documents may be uploaded to OneDrive by users.

OneDrive provides 5 GB of storage space for free, with additional storage choices of 100 GB, 1 TB, and 6 TB available individually or as part of Office 365 subscriptions.

The program, formerly known as Windows Live Folders (and codenamed SkyDrive), was initially offered as a restricted beta to a select group of testers in the United States. The service was opened out to a larger public on August 1, 2007. The service was renamed Windows Live SkyDrive and made accessible to testers in the United Kingdom and India on August 9, 2007. SkyDrive was first offered in 38 countries and regions on May 22, 2008, and was later expanded to 62. Individual SkyDrive accounts were updated from 5 GB to 25 GB on December 2, 2008, and Microsoft provided a new entry point called Windows Live Images that allowed users to view their photos and videos saved on SkyDrive. Users may use this entry point to add “People tags” to their photographs, download photos into Windows Photo Gallery or as a ZIP file, and examine Exif metadata for the photos they submitted, such as camera information. With Silverlight, Microsoft has now provided the option to create full-screen slide displays for pictures.

On June 7, 2010, SkyDrive received a “Wave 4” upgrade, which included the ability to interact with Office Web Apps (formerly known as Office Online) and versioning. The option to synchronize and exchange bookmarked web links across users through SkyDrive was also removed in this version owing to the termination of the Windows Live Toolbar. Users could still synchronize their favorites between computers using Windows Live Mesh, which replaced the prior Windows Live Favorites, until February 2013, when it was discontinued.

Users of Office Live Workspace, which was introduced in October 2007, were moved to Windows Live Office in June 2010. All current workspaces, documents, and sharing permissions were migrated. The two services merged as a consequence of Microsoft’s decision to integrate its Office Live team into Windows Live in January 2009, as well as many flaws in Office Live Workspace, such as the absence of high-fidelity document viewing and the inability to edit files from within the web browser. Offline collaboration and co-authoring were similarly not available with Office Live Workspace; instead, documents were “checked out” and “checked in,” but the service did connect with SharedView for real-time screen sharing.
