Oswald the Lucky Rabbit (also known as Oswald the Rabbit or Oswald Rabbit) – an anthropomorphic rabbit and cartoon character created by Walt Disney, for animated animal films and distributed by Universal Studios in the 1920s and 1930s. Disney’s first cartoon character from the Disney Studio to feature in their series. In 1928, Charles Mintz took the rights of Oswald from Walt Disney and claimed it the official character of Universal Studios. In November 1928, as a replacement to compete with Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, Walt Disney, and Ub Iwerks created Mickey Mouse for Walt Disney’s studio.

In 2003, Buena Vista Games introduced the concept of a video game for an Oswald-themed to Disney President and Chief Operating Officer Bob Iger, who then decided to bring Oswald to Disney. In 2006, almost 80 years after Disney studio broke away from Universal, Walt Disney managed to acquire Oswald’s intellectual property and catalog of Disney-produced Oswald films (with NBCUniversal exchanges Oswald for Al-Michaels as a play-by-play announcer on NBC Sunday Night Football).

Oswald returned to prominence in Disney’s 2010 video game, Epic Mickey. The game’s metafiction plot parallels Oswald’s real-world history, dedicated to the feelings of the Disney character’s abdication and the envy of Mickey Mouse. Since then, he has appeared in Disney theme parks and comics, as well as in two subsequent games: Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two and Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion.
