A paper towel is a disposable absorbent disposable towel made from paper. In Britain, kitchen paper towel are also known as kitchen roll, kitchen paper, kitchen towel. For home use, it is usually sold in a roll of perforated sheets, but some are sold in stacks of pre-cut and pre-folded layers for use in paper towel dispensers. Unlike cloth towels, paper towels are disposable and designed for one-time use. Paper towels absorb water because they are a woven fabric that allows water to move between the fibers even against gravity (capillary effect). Paper towels serve the same purposes as regular towels, such as drying hands, cleaning windows and other surfaces, dusting off, and cleaning up spills. Paper towel dispensers are often used in toilets that many people use, as paper towels are often considered to be more hygienic than hot air hand dryers (and, of course, shared cloth towels).

In 1907, a paper company in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania introduced paper towels to prevent the spread of cold from towels in toilets. It is widely believed that this was partly coincidental and was the solution for a railroad car full of long rolls of paper intended for toilet paper that were not suitable for cutting. In 1919, William E. Corbin, Henry Chase, and Harold Titus began experimenting with paper towels at the Brown Company Research Center in Berlin, New Hampshire. By 1922, Corbin had perfected its product and began mass production in a cascade factory on the Berlin/Gorham line. This product is called Nibroc paper towels (Corbin spelled backwards). In 1931, the Scott Paper Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania introduced its own rolls of kitchen paper towels. In 1995, Kimberly-Clark acquired the Scott Paper Company.

Paper is made from primary or recycled pulp, which is obtained from wood or fiber crops. They are sometimes bleached during the manufacturing process to make the paper easier to color. Paper towel rolls often include complex color images on each square (such as flowers or teddy bears). Resin size is used to improve wet strength. Paper towels are individually wrapped and sold in stacks or continuous rolls and are available in two different grades: domestic and institutional. Many companies make paper towels. Some of these include, but are not limited to: Bounty, Seventh Generation, Scott and Viva, among many others.

Tissue products in North America, including paper towels, can be divided into consumer and “commercial” markets, with household consumption accounting for approximately two-thirds of total North American consumption. Commercial use or any other use outside the North American household accounts for one third of North American consumption.
