A companion animal, often known as a pet, is an animal that is maintained primarily for the companionship or amusement of its owner rather than as a working animal, livestock, or laboratory animal. Popular pets are typically thought to have beautiful looks, intellect, and relatable personalities; however, sure pets (such as abandoned animals) may be taken in on a charitable basis and welcomed by the owner regardless of these traits.

Dogs and cats are two of the most popular pets; a cat lover is known as an ailurophile, while a dog lover is a cynophile. Rabbits, ferrets, pigs, rodents such gerbils, hamsters, chinchillas, rats, mice, and guinea pigs; avian pets like parrots, passerines, and fowls; reptile pets like turtles, alligators, crocodiles, lizards, and snakes; aquatic pets like fish, freshwater and saltwater snails, amphibians like frog. The most miniature companion animals are grouped as pocket pets, whereas the largest companion animals are horses and bovines.

Pets give both physical and emotional advantages to their owners (or “guardians”). Walking a dog may provide exercise, fresh air, and social connection for both the person and the dog. Pets may provide companionship to those who live alone or older adults who do not have enough social interaction.

Therapy animals, mainly dogs or cats, are medically authorized and brought to visit restricted humans, such as youngsters in hospitals or the elderly in nursing homes. Pet therapy uses trained animals and handlers to help patients attain specific physical, social, cognitive, or emotional goals.

Lack of capacity to care for the pet when traveling (34.6 percent), lack of time (28.6 percent), and lack of adequate housing (28.3 percent) were the most prevalent reasons for not keeping a pet, according to a 1994 Canadian research, with hate of pets being less common (19.6 percent ).

Because of the lack of agency and objectification of non-human animals, several academicians, ethicists, and animal rights organizations have expressed concern about owning pets.

Domestic animal investment in China has increased from $3.12 billion in 2010 to $25 billion in 2018. Pet owners in China possess 51 million dogs and 41 million cats, with many choosing to buy pet food from other countries. There are 755 million pets worldwide, up from 389 million in 2013.

According to a 2009 poll conducted by Italian family groups, Italy’s pet population is over 45 million. There are 7 million dogs, 7.5 million cats, 16 million fish, 12 million birds, and 10 million snakes.

According to a 2007 survey conducted by the University of Bristol, 26% of UK homes owned cats, and 31% owned dogs in 2006, resulting in total domestic populations of roughly 10.3 million cats and 10.5 million dogs. According to the poll, 47.2 percent of cat-owning families had at least one person with a bachelor’s degree, compared to 38.4 percent of dog-owning households.
