Peter Hayden Dinklage was born on June 11, 1969, in Morristown, NJ, an insurance salesman John Karl Dinklage and elementary school music teacher Diane Dinklage. He was born with achondroplasia, a common form of dwarfism. Dinklage, along with his parents and brother Jonathan, grew up as the only dwarf in the family at the historic Brookside section of Mendham Township, NJ. He is of German and Irish descent. Jonathan is a graduated from Rutgers University and the Mausoleum College of Art and is a musical Hamilton violinist. As a child, Dinklage and his brothers played puppet plays in their neighbors. Dinklage described Jonathan as a “real performer in the family” and stated that his brother’s passion for the violin was the only thing that kept him from pursuing acting.

Dinklage had his first theatrical success in a fifth-grade production of The Velveteen Rabbit. Playing the lead, he was delighted by the audience’s response to the show. Dinklage went to Delbarton School, a Catholic prep school for boys, and developed his acting. In 1984, Dinklage was inspired by the American playwright Sam Shepard’s creation of the play True West to pursue a career in theater.

Dinklage then went to Bennington University, where he earned a degree in theater and performed in numerous works before graduating in 1991. Later, he moved to New York with his friend Ian Bell to set up a theater company. They left the apartment because they did not pay their apartment rent.
